What can Formula 1 statistics tell us?
A Formula 1 result tells us where each driver finished, but it does not always explain how competitive they were during the race. A driver may finish behind a rival despite having stronger pace because of strategy, traffic, a slow pit stop, a penalty, damage or the timing of a Safety Car.
Statistics can help separate some of those factors. Looking at lap times across an entire Grand Prix can show whether a driver maintained consistent speed, struggled during a particular stint or gained performance after switching tyres. Comparing race pace with fastest laps can also highlight the difference between sustained performance and one exceptional lap.
No individual statistic can tell the complete story, but combining several measures provides a much clearer picture of performance than the finishing order alone.
Race pace statistics
Race pace is one of the most useful measures when comparing Formula 1 drivers because it focuses on sustained performance rather than outright one-lap speed.
For the ScuderiaFans Race Comparison tool, race pace is represented using the median of eligible racing laps. Laps significantly affected by events such as pit entry, pit exit, Safety Cars, Virtual Safety Cars, red flags or invalid timing are excluded from the race-pace sample.
This approach helps reduce the influence of non-representative laps while preserving the detailed lap information in the Lap-by-Lap view. A lower median lap time indicates the faster race pace across the eligible sample.
However, race pace should always be interpreted in context. Drivers can be using different tyre compounds, following different strategies or managing their cars to different targets. Traffic, weather, fuel levels, car damage and team instructions can also influence lap times.
Fastest lap statistics
The fastest lap represents the quickest valid lap completed by a driver during a Grand Prix. It is useful for identifying peak performance, but it does not necessarily tell us who was fastest over the full race distance.
A driver on fresh tyres late in the race may set a very quick fastest lap while another driver has been consistently faster across the majority of the Grand Prix. This is why the Race Comparison tool keeps Fastest Lap and Race Pace as separate statistics.
Looking at both together can provide a more complete understanding of how the performance of two drivers differed during the race.
Lap-by-lap Formula 1 data
Lap-by-lap analysis gives a more detailed view of how a Grand Prix developed. Instead of reducing an entire race to one average or median number, it allows you to follow changes in performance from lap to lap.
This can reveal tyre degradation, the impact of fresh tyres after a pit stop, periods spent in traffic and changes in the pace advantage between two drivers. It can also help explain why two competitors with very similar overall race pace may have experienced very different races.
When an unusual lap is affected by a pit stop, Safety Car, Virtual Safety Car or another interruption, the comparison identifies that status so the time is not mistaken for a normal racing lap.
F1 driver and constructor standings

How ScuderiaFans processes Formula 1 statistics
Our interactive statistics tools are designed to process imported race information locally rather than making external data requests every time a visitor opens a comparison. Available race data is normalised and validated before being made available through the public tools.
For race-pace calculations, the objective is to use laps that are representative of normal racing conditions. Obvious non-representative laps such as the opening lap, pit-in and pit-out laps, Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car periods, race interruptions and invalid timing are excluded where applicable.
The original race context remains important. Statistical results should therefore be treated as analytical indicators rather than definitive judgments about which driver or car performed better. Where third-party datasets are used, the relevant attribution is displayed within the individual tool.
Why context matters when comparing F1 drivers
Two drivers can record almost identical lap times while achieving them under very different circumstances. One may be conserving tyres while the other is attacking, one may be running in clean air while the other is following another car, and their tyre ages or compounds may differ significantly.
Weather can also change during a race, while track evolution means the circuit itself may become faster or slower over time. Damage, penalties and team instructions introduce further variables that cannot always be captured by a single statistic.
