Comparing two Formula 1 drivers is about much more than looking at the final race result or identifying who set the fastest lap. Strategy, tyre life, traffic, pit stops, Safety Cars and changing track conditions can all influence the headline numbers. How to use the F1 driver comparison tool

What does Race Pace mean in Formula 1?
Race pace describes how quickly a driver is able to lap consistently during a Grand Prix rather than how fast they can go on one exceptional lap. It is one of the most useful ways of analysing performance over a race distance because Formula 1 races are won through sustained speed, tyre management, strategy and consistency.
For this comparison tool, race pace is represented by the median of a driver’s eligible racing laps. The median is the middle lap time after the eligible laps have been ordered from fastest to slowest. Using the median rather than simply taking the fastest lap or an unrestricted average reduces the influence of isolated unusually slow laps and provides a more representative indication of sustained pace.
A lower median lap time means the driver was faster across the eligible sample. The pace-gap card shows the difference between Driver A and Driver B in seconds per lap. Even a gap of only a few hundredths or tenths can become meaningful when repeated across a long Grand Prix.
Which laps are included in the Race Pace calculation?
The aim is to compare representative racing laps rather than every recorded lap indiscriminately. Several types of lap can produce times that say very little about a driver’s underlying race pace, so they are excluded from the Race Pace median.
The calculation excludes Lap 1, because the standing start and opening-lap traffic make it fundamentally different from a normal racing lap. It also excludes pit-in and pit-out laps, where time is affected by pit-lane entry, the stop itself or pit-lane exit.
Laps affected by a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car are excluded because drivers are required to reduce their speed. Laps associated with red flags and other race interruptions are also removed, as are laps containing invalid, deleted or missing timing data.
These marked laps can still remain visible in the Lap-by-Lap table because they are part of the story of the race. Excluding them from the Race Pace calculation does not mean they did not happen; it simply prevents non-representative laps from distorting the median.
Race Pace vs fastest lap: what is the difference?
Race Pace and Fastest Lap answer two different questions.
Fastest Lap shows the quickest individual valid lap completed by each driver. A driver may set an outstanding lap late in the race on fresh tyres and with a lighter fuel load, even if their overall pace during the Grand Prix was slower than that of a rival.
Race Pace, by contrast, looks at the broader sample of eligible racing laps. It is therefore possible for Driver A to have the faster median race pace while Driver B records the quicker fastest lap. That is not a contradiction: the two statistics measure different aspects of performance.
This distinction is especially useful when analysing Ferrari drivers such as Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, or when comparing them with drivers from rival teams across different circuits and race conditions.
How to read the Lap-by-Lap comparison
The Lap-by-Lap view plots both drivers’ recorded lap times across the race and provides a detailed table underneath. This allows you to see not only which driver was faster overall, but also when the balance of performance changed.
A group of progressively slower laps may indicate tyre degradation, while a sudden improvement after a pit stop can show the effect of a fresh compound. Different strategy windows can also create periods where one driver appears substantially faster before the situation reverses later in the race.
The Status column identifies laps affected by factors such as pit entry, pit exit, Safety Cars, Virtual Safety Cars or invalid timing. Marked laps remain useful when reconstructing the race but are not treated as normal clean laps for the Race Pace calculation.
Extreme interruption timing values that would make the chart difficult to read can be omitted from the visual graph while remaining visible in the detailed table. This keeps the chart useful without removing the underlying race information.
Why race pace does not tell the whole story
Race Pace is a powerful comparison metric, but it should not be interpreted as a definitive ranking of driver ability or car performance. Formula 1 races contain many variables that a lap-time calculation cannot completely remove.
Drivers may use different tyre compounds, run different stint lengths, encounter different levels of traffic or be asked to manage tyres, brakes, fuel or power-unit temperatures. Damage can reduce a car’s performance, while weather and track evolution can mean that two drivers complete apparently comparable laps under different conditions.
Strategy is another major factor. A driver extending a stint may deliberately sacrifice lap time to preserve tyres, while a rival on fresher rubber may be instructed to push. The resulting pace difference is real, but it does not necessarily mean the faster driver had the faster car throughout the entire Grand Prix.

Why use the median instead of the average?
An average can be strongly influenced by a small number of unusually slow laps. Even after obvious pit-stop and Safety Car laps have been removed, racing can still produce occasional outliers because of traffic, mistakes or temporary problems.
The median is less sensitive to those isolated extremes. By identifying the middle value in the eligible lap sample, it gives a stable measure of the typical pace produced by a driver during the race.
It is still important to look at the Lap-by-Lap graph alongside the median. Two drivers can record almost identical median race pace while reaching that number in very different ways: one may have been consistently steady, while another may have alternated between particularly fast and relatively slow phases.

Does faster Race Pace mean one driver definitely performed better?
Not necessarily. The calculation shows which driver had the quicker median across the eligible laps, but it cannot fully account for tyre strategy, traffic, car damage, fuel management, weather, team instructions or every other race variable. Race Pace should therefore be considered an analytical indicator rather than a complete verdict on driver performance.
