Methodology: Grand Prix starts, points, constructor breakdowns and season summaries are calculated from locally processed F1DB race and Sprint results. Points use the same race-result definition across career, Ferrari, constructor and season views so the totals reconcile. Official season championship points are retained separately and noted where historical dropped-score rules create a difference. Career wins, podiums, poles and fastest laps use F1DB driver-level totals where available.

Gilles Villeneuve Formula 1 career statistics

Gilles Villeneuve competed in Formula 1 from 1977 through 1982. His career began with a single appearance for McLaren before he joined Ferrari later in his debut season and remained with the Scuderia for the rest of his Formula 1 career.

His complete record includes 67 official Grand Prix starts, six victories, 13 podium finishes, two pole positions and eight fastest laps. Villeneuve’s best Drivers’ Championship result was second place in 1979.

Gilles Villeneuve’s Formula 1 debut with McLaren

Villeneuve made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren at the 1977 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. It proved to be his only World Championship race start for the team.

Later that season, Ferrari gave Villeneuve the opportunity that would define his Formula 1 career, beginning a relationship with the Scuderia that continued until 1982.

Gilles Villeneuve joins Ferrari

Villeneuve joined Ferrari during the closing stages of the 1977 Formula 1 season. He made his first Grand Prix start for the Scuderia at his home Canadian Grand Prix before also competing in Japan.

The following season became his first full campaign with Ferrari and provided the opportunity for Villeneuve to establish himself as a regular Formula 1 competitor.

Gilles Villeneuve’s first Ferrari victory

Villeneuve’s first Formula 1 victory came at the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Racing in front of his home supporters, he won the final round of the season to secure both his maiden Grand Prix victory and his first win for Ferrari.

The result became one of the defining moments of Villeneuve’s career and began a six-race winning record achieved entirely with the Scuderia.

Gilles Villeneuve’s 1978 Ferrari season

The 1978 season was Villeneuve’s first full Formula 1 campaign. He made 16 starts for Ferrari and gradually developed into a regular points contender as the season progressed.

His year culminated with victory in Canada, while another podium finish earlier in the campaign helped establish the results that would lead into his strongest championship season in 1979.

Gilles Villeneuve’s 1979 Formula 1 title challenge

The 1979 season produced the strongest Drivers’ Championship result of Villeneuve’s career. Driving the Ferrari 312T4, he won three Grands Prix and finished runner-up in the championship behind Ferrari team-mate Jody Scheckter.

Villeneuve recorded seven podium finishes during the season and played a major role in Ferrari securing both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

Gilles Villeneuve’s three victories in 1979

Villeneuve won the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, the United States Grand Prix West at Long Beach and the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen during the 1979 season.

The three victories represented the highest number Villeneuve achieved in a single Formula 1 campaign and helped him secure second place in the Drivers’ Championship.

Gilles Villeneuve and the 1979 Ferrari championship

Ferrari entered the 1979 season with Villeneuve partnered by Jody Scheckter. The combination proved highly successful, with both drivers winning races as Ferrari returned to the top of the Formula 1 championship.

Jody Scheckter ultimately secured the Drivers’ World Championship, with Villeneuve finishing runner-up. Their results also delivered the Constructors’ Championship to Ferrari.

Gilles Villeneuve’s 1980 Ferrari season

Ferrari struggled for competitiveness during the 1980 season, and Villeneuve was unable to add another Grand Prix victory or podium finish to his record.

Despite the difficult campaign, Villeneuve remained with the Scuderia as Ferrari prepared to introduce a new turbocharged technical package for the following season.

Gilles Villeneuve and Ferrari’s turbo era

The 1981 season introduced the Ferrari 126CK and its turbocharged engine. The car offered considerable straight-line performance but could be difficult to manage, creating a very different challenge from Ferrari’s previous machinery.

Villeneuve nevertheless produced two of the most significant victories of his career during the season, winning consecutive Grands Prix in Monaco and Spain.

Gilles Villeneuve’s 1981 Monaco victory

Villeneuve won the 1981 Monaco Grand Prix to give Ferrari its first victory of the season. The success around the narrow Monte Carlo street circuit became particularly notable given the characteristics of Ferrari’s turbocharged car.

The victory was Villeneuve’s fifth in Formula 1 and was followed immediately by another memorable performance at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Gilles Villeneuve’s final Formula 1 victory

Villeneuve’s sixth and final Formula 1 victory came at the 1981 Spanish Grand Prix at Jarama. He spent much of the race defending against a closely grouped line of faster cars and held the lead to the finish.

The result completed a Formula 1 winning record consisting entirely of victories for Ferrari, beginning with Canada in 1978 and ending at Jarama in 1981.

Gilles Villeneuve Ferrari F1 statistics

Villeneuve made 66 official Grand Prix starts for Ferrari between 1977 and 1982. His record with the Scuderia includes six victories, 13 podium finishes, two pole positions and eight fastest laps.

With the exception of his Formula 1 debut for McLaren, Villeneuve’s entire Grand Prix career was spent with Ferrari. Every championship point, victory, podium, pole position and fastest lap he achieved in Formula 1 therefore came with the Scuderia.

Gilles Villeneuve’s Ferrari victories

Villeneuve won six Grands Prix for Ferrari. His first came at the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix, followed by three victories in 1979 and two more during the 1981 season.

Those wins were achieved in Canada, South Africa, the United States, Monaco and Spain and covered very different circuit layouts and racing conditions.

Gilles Villeneuve wins, podiums and pole positions

Villeneuve completed his Formula 1 career with six Grand Prix victories, 13 podium finishes and two pole positions. Because his only non-Ferrari appearance was his debut with McLaren, all of those achievements belong to his Ferrari record.

His first pole position came at the 1979 United States Grand Prix West at Long Beach, while his second was achieved at the 1981 San Marino Grand Prix.

Gilles Villeneuve fastest laps

Villeneuve recorded eight fastest laps during his Formula 1 career, all while racing for Ferrari. Six of those fastest laps came during his runner-up championship season in 1979.

For a broader historical view of race fastest laps by driver and constructor, visit the F1 Fastest Laps & Race Performance Records database.

Gilles Villeneuve F1 career by constructor

Villeneuve’s Formula 1 career included only two constructors. He made one official Grand Prix start for McLaren in 1977 before making his remaining 66 starts for Ferrari between 1977 and 1982.

The constructor table above therefore illustrates how closely Villeneuve’s Formula 1 statistics are connected to Ferrari, with every major result of his career achieved for the Scuderia.

Gilles Villeneuve season-by-season F1 statistics

The season-by-season table provides a chronological view of Villeneuve’s Formula 1 career from his 1977 debut through his final season in 1982. It separates his single McLaren appearance from his subsequent Ferrari campaigns and shows the development of his results across six seasons.

Because Villeneuve’s Formula 1 career is complete, these records form a stable historical dataset and do not require regular race-by-race updates.

Gilles Villeneuve’s 1982 Ferrari season

Villeneuve remained with Ferrari for the 1982 season alongside Didier Pironi. Ferrari had developed a competitive evolution of its turbocharged car, creating expectations that the team could challenge strongly during the championship.

Villeneuve’s final Formula 1 race start came at the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, where he finished second behind Didier Pironi.

Gilles Villeneuve and the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix

The 1982 San Marino Grand Prix became a major episode in Villeneuve’s final season. Villeneuve and Didier Pironi finished first and second on the road for Ferrari, with Didier Pironi taking victory and Villeneuve finishing second.

The race created a serious disagreement between the Ferrari team-mates over how the closing stages had been handled and became the final Grand Prix that Villeneuve completed.

Gilles Villeneuve’s final Formula 1 weekend

Villeneuve’s final Formula 1 event was the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. He suffered a fatal accident during qualifying and therefore did not start the Grand Prix.

His career ended with 67 official Formula 1 starts, six victories, 13 podium finishes, two pole positions and eight fastest laps.

Why Gilles Villeneuve has 67 starts but 68 entries

Villeneuve was entered in 68 Formula 1 World Championship Grands Prix but officially started 67 of them. The difference comes from the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, for which he was entered but did not take the race start following his qualifying accident.

The same distinction applies to his Ferrari record: Villeneuve had 67 Ferrari entries but 66 official Grand Prix starts. His other official Formula 1 start was his 1977 British Grand Prix appearance for McLaren.

Gilles Villeneuve’s home victory in Canada

Villeneuve’s maiden Formula 1 victory at the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix holds a distinctive place in his career. It was achieved in his home country during his first full season with Ferrari and remained his only Canadian Grand Prix victory.

The Montreal circuit on which Formula 1 continues to race was later named Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, permanently linking his name with the Canadian Grand Prix.

Gilles Villeneuve’s place in Ferrari history

Villeneuve’s statistical record is relatively compact compared with drivers who competed across much longer Formula 1 careers, but almost every major achievement he recorded came with Ferrari.

His Ferrari career includes 66 starts, six victories, 13 podium finishes, two pole positions, eight fastest laps and a runner-up finish in the 1979 Drivers’ World Championship.

His relationship with Ferrari, his victories and his performances during the late 1970s and early 1980s established Villeneuve as one of the most recognised drivers associated with the Scuderia.

Gilles Villeneuve circuit records

Villeneuve recorded Formula 1 victories at circuits including Montreal, Kyalami, Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Monaco and Jarama during his Ferrari career.

How Gilles Villeneuve’s F1 records are calculated

The statistics on this page are generated from locally processed historical Formula 1 data. Career totals, constructor records, Ferrari-specific results and season-by-season statistics are calculated separately so that Villeneuve’s single McLaren appearance and subsequent Ferrari career remain correctly attributed.

Race entries and official Grand Prix starts are treated separately. Villeneuve had 68 Formula 1 entries but 67 official starts. At Ferrari, the equivalent figures are 67 entries and 66 starts because he did not start the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix.

Historical championship points from Villeneuve’s era also require care because Formula 1 used rules under which only selected results could count towards a driver’s final championship total. The statistics database therefore preserves race-result data separately from season championship classification where appropriate.
