Ferrari 066/10 is the code name of the engine that will power the two SF-24 cars in the upcoming Formula 1 championship. We’re talking about a super-powerful endothermic engine, accompanied by hybrid part that achieved good stability last year. It’s the beating heart of the car that aims to make a clear step forward in 2024. Winning against Red Bull won’t be easy.
Nor will it be easy to stay ahead of Mercedes and McLaren, teams that are quite competitive and on a clear upward trajectory. Indeed, this isn’t the realistic goal of the Maranello-based team. Ferrari’s plan aims to build solid foundations upon which to rest its future ambitions. Achieving a target requires excellence, knowing that building a winning cycle takes time, maximum effort, and a lot of know-how.
Operations are underway to strengthen the package. In this regard, the Italian team is moving well, quietly making significant moves that make noise. Several technicians have been recruited to bolster the Ferrari Racing Division A swarm of operational minds is already at work, to which additional engineers will be added in the coming months. Meanwhile, Project 676, a.k.a. Ferrari SF-24, is in the analysis phase using the “seven-post rig.”
We’re talking about the technology that F1 uses through dynamic benches, tools that simulate bumps and imperfections in the asphalt. These devices are very useful for corroborating the correct functioning of the car, simulating changes in camber, a very relevant theme for studying in detail the “dynamic behavior” of the car, in relation to the suspension schemes adopted, which, as we know, on the new Italian car, will see changes related to mere kinematics.
Ferrari: Continued Refinement Work on Power Unit 066/10
According to information gathered by the editorial team of FUnoanalisitecnica, Ferrari is making use of every small opportunity available. They recently did so through the Pirelli tests in Barcelona. A two-day event where the Prancing Horse worked on different configurations to test tire wear. As we know, the correct use of tires is vitally important in F1, especially for the current wing car setup.
This is a concern that, as we explained recently, the Maranello team has decided to pay maximum attention to with the aim of eliminating suboptimal performance. After all, it’s well known: having an excellent level of competitiveness in qualifying when the car carries few kilograms of fuel and then not being able to translate it on track with a high fuel load, makes all the efforts of technicians and engineers in vain.

On the other hand, in F1, apart from Sprint Races, points are distributed on Sundays. So here comes a “mini pool” of individuals specialized in vehicle dynamics. A very necessary measure to give continuity to the work done during the last racing campaign. This also refers to the changes made to the software that controls the power unit 066/10. A technical “ordinance” that has brought many advantages to the red car.
A less aggressive acceleration phase that, however, hasn’t changed one of Ferrari’s strengths: the great traction that the Italian team has shown over the past two championships. We’ve talked about it several times during the 2023 season, arguing that the SF-23 achieved a first and small step in tire management. This factor also reduced fuel consumption from the power unit.
This achievement provided the opportunity to push to the maximum on the straights, without, however, encountering annoying power cuts on the long straights of the various tracks that make up the increasingly rich Formula 1 calendar. This work was resumed in Spain, Pirelli tests, to verify additional operational settings. It’s no secret, in fact, that the Maranello power unit is currently the best.
This is why the engine technicians are trying to further refine this “deadly” weapon, to exploit it to the maximum even in relation to the “burning tire” issue. Furthermore, as we know, many efforts have been made to optimize reliability. We just have to wait for the pre-season tests, on February 21st, 22nd, and 23rd in Sakhir, where the validation of the tasks performed will have to be confirmed, as in F1 only actions count, not just the nice accompanying words.
