A vision of Verstappen and a possible Ferrari future: 2027 remains an opportunity
This weekend Max Verstappen will take to the track with Ferrari at the Nürburgring for his first endurance race. The Dutchman has already completed tests behind the wheel of the Maranello-built car, and from this comes an intriguing behind-the-scenes story linked to his future in Formula 1.
The four-time world champion has repeatedly stated that a move to Ferrari would only be possible if the team had a car capable of fighting at the very front. While he recognizes the prestige and heritage of the Scuderia, his priority remains winning and always having the tools to do so. That said, the idea of Verstappen eventually moving to Maranello is far from impossible.
The Mugello test and a call
In a video on his own channel, Sky commentator Carlo Vanzini revealed details about the connection between Verstappen and Ferrari. The first point he highlighted was the GT3 test at Mugello. Max drove the car that he will race in the Nürburgring 4 Hours on Saturday, September 27.
“He went to Mugello, completed laps, gave feedback, and spoke with the engineers,” Vanzini explained. “They were impressed by his dedication and his desire to understand every detail of the car. During a dinner in Miami, he told us he enjoys driving in situations that present difficulties, where he has to put in extra effort to solve certain challenges.”
Carlo Vanzini also shared an episode that never made it to the cameras: “The next day I went to the Ferrari camp and said that if they give Max a call, he would walk to Maranello. I won’t spoil what was said, but I can tell you what I did.”
Indications about the future
In the same video, the Italian commentator made clear what direction Ferrari is taking: “They have never directly targeted Verstappen. Does Ferrari need someone like Max? No, the real need is to bring in engineers like Rob Marshall and Adrian Newey.”
Still, a concrete opportunity remains to see the Dutchman in red: “Will we see Verstappen at Ferrari? I say yes. Something around 2027 is possible. Max wants to go there to win, not just to say he raced for them.” This statement perfectly summarizes the mindset of the Red Bull driver regarding any future link to Maranello.
