Ferrari deliberately chose the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix to serve its grid penalties, with team principal Fred Vasseur revealing that the Scuderia had approached Saturday’s rain-affected qualifying session with Sunday’s race firmly in mind. Despite the difficult conditions at Interlagos, the French manager was encouraged by the performance of the SF-26 and explained why preserving tyres could prove crucial to Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc’s recovery attempts.
The Ferrari boss also addressed the recent tensions between his two drivers, confirming that discussions had taken place and expressing confidence that the matter had been resolved.
Fred Vasseur explains Ferrari’s Brazilian GP qualifying strategy
Qualifying at Interlagos was an unusually lengthy affair, with heavy rain causing Q1 to extend beyond an hour. The extreme weather conditions made visibility and grip particularly challenging, forcing race control to intervene and delay proceedings.
Speaking after the session, Fred Vasseur defended the decision to suspend running, insisting that the difficult conditions justified the interruption.
“It was a long qualifying session, but I think it was the right decision by race control as well, because the conditions were definitely too extreme.”
Despite the disruption, the team principal was pleased with Ferrari’s overall performance. The SF-26 demonstrated competitive pace in the wet, an area that had frequently proved challenging for the Maranello team in the past.
With the grid penalties already influencing the starting positions of both Ferrari drivers, the priority was not simply to maximise qualifying performance. Instead, the Italian team wanted to preserve as many tyres as possible for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
“From our side, the performance was there from start to finish. We wanted to save tyres because, with the penalty, we’ll be starting from the back. The most important thing is that conditions will probably be quite similar tomorrow. The priority was to save tyres, but the pace was there from beginning to end.”
The decision reflects Ferrari’s focus on the race rather than qualifying alone. With potentially similar weather expected on Sunday, having additional tyre options available could provide greater flexibility as the drivers attempt to move forward through the field.
The importance of tyre management at Interlagos has already been highlighted in ScuderiaFans’ Formula 1 tyre and stint analysis, which allows fans to compare compounds, stint lengths and race strategies across the grid.
Why Ferrari deliberately chose Brazil to take its grid penalties
Fred Vasseur also revealed that Ferrari’s decision to serve the penalties at the Brazilian Grand Prix was deliberate. The team knew the penalties would have to be taken before the end of the season and identified Interlagos as a potentially favourable circuit for recovering positions.
“We deliberately took the penalty this weekend because we had to do it before the end of the season. We think this Brazilian Grand Prix is ideal for making our way back through the field and, if conditions are difficult, it will be a good opportunity.”
Rather than treating the grid drops solely as a setback, Ferrari believes the characteristics of the race could create opportunities for its drivers to make progress.
The team principal pointed to previous recovery drives by Max Verstappen as examples of what can be achieved at Interlagos, particularly when unpredictable weather influences the race.
“I think Max won from 16th position in the past and then, the following year, came back from the back of the grid to finish third, if I’m not mistaken. The conditions will certainly be tricky and that could present another opportunity, but we’ll see.”
His comments underline Ferrari’s belief that starting further down the order does not necessarily eliminate the possibility of a competitive result, especially if the weather creates a more unpredictable race.
Nevertheless, the French manager acknowledged that there are no guarantees. Any potential recovery will depend on how the race unfolds and whether the team and its drivers can take advantage of the situations that arise.
Ferrari targets race opportunities with saved tyres
The prospect of another wet and unpredictable Grand Prix explains why Ferrari placed so much emphasis on preserving tyres during qualifying. With both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc facing difficult starting positions, the team expects a demanding race in which strategy and the ability to respond to changing circumstances could become particularly important.
Fred Vasseur highlighted the possibility of interruptions, suggesting that a red flag or Safety Car period could create additional opportunities for his drivers.
“The race will be long and difficult, but that’s why we saved some tyres. If there’s a red flag or a Safety Car, there will be more opportunities for the drivers.”
Although such interruptions cannot be predicted, the team wants to be prepared to react if they occur. Preserving tyres gives Ferrari additional strategic options in a race that could be influenced by changing weather and unexpected developments.
The challenging conditions at Interlagos are also examined in Ferrari’s Brazilian Grand Prix tyre and wet-weather analysis, which considers the difficulties posed by the circuit and the possibility of heavy rain.
Fred Vasseur confirms talks with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc
Beyond the sporting and strategic considerations, Fred Vasseur also addressed the relationship between Ferrari’s two drivers following the recent tensions involving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
The team principal explained that a discussion had taken place on Thursday evening at the hotel and described the conversation positively. He indicated that the situation had been resolved, with the two drivers having an opportunity to discuss the matter.
“We had a discussion on Thursday evening at the hotel, and it was a good discussion. It was positive to talk, but when I got back, we spoke straight away. I would have preferred the two of them to start first and second, but that’s how it is.”
The comments come after considerable attention surrounding Ferrari’s internal racing rules following the Mexican Grand Prix controversy, with the relationship between the two drivers remaining a prominent subject.
Although Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will not start alongside one another in Brazil, Fred Vasseur made clear that his preferred outcome would have been to see both drivers at the very front of the grid. For now, Ferrari’s immediate focus is on Sunday’s race. The team has accepted its grid penalties, retained additional tyres and demonstrated encouraging wet-weather performance during qualifying.
Whether those preparations translate into a successful recovery will depend on the conditions and opportunities that emerge throughout the Brazilian Grand Prix.
