Ferrari tests two different setups with Leclerc and Hamilton and the FP2 mistake in Singapore
The first day of free practice for the Singapore Grand Prix revealed a dual-sided Ferrari: highly competitive in FP1, but progressively struggling during FP2. This decline was due to a specific team error, combined with the fact that the drivers tested two different solutions on their cars. Let’s take a closer look at the situation.
Mixed fortunes in FP1 and FP2
The initial practice sessions highlighted a potential fight for victory between McLaren and Red Bull, while Ferrari lost the positive momentum it had in the morning during FP2. As a result, Maranello enters Saturday as a potential third force on the grid, although threats from behind remain significant. The team must avoid mistakes to aim for at least the third row, but caution is advised.
What went wrong for Ferrari in FP2?
The key Ferrari mistake in FP2 was choosing the wrong direction when trying to improve the baseline setup from FP1. According to Italian journalist Federico Albano, this made the car harder to drive, leading to multiple errors from both drivers. Consequently, the team will need to revisit and adjust certain decisions, even though Charles Leclerc has indicated that Ferrari has identified the main source of the problem. However, the team will head into qualifying with limited data, as further setup changes are planned for FP3. Additionally, track conditions during qualifying are expected to differ, making it a challenging scenario for the Scuderia. Optimizing the car as much as possible is now crucial for maximizing results.

Different approaches for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc
As seen previously in Azerbaijan, Ferrari ran two different rear wing configurations in Singapore. Lewis Hamilton opted for a higher-downforce setup (similar to Monaco) and appeared fairly satisfied with his car’s balance. Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, tried a lower-downforce wing and encountered various difficulties during FP2. Once again, Ferrari faces an important decision ahead of the critical qualifying session, hoping to avoid repeating the struggles experienced two weeks ago, especially given the potential for changing conditions.
