Lewis Hamilton ignores red flag in F1 Singapore GP FP3: FIA makes decision
Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton were at risk of a penalty after the British driver allegedly ignored a red flag during the FP3 session of the Singapore Grand Prix. Hamilton, no stranger to incidents of this kind, had previously received a penalty to be served at Monza after ignoring yellow flags at Zandvoort. This time, the situation arose following an accident involving Liam Lawson in the Racing Bulls car.
The Ferrari weekend was already under pressure: at Singapore, a track where starting position is crucial, Lewis Hamilton faced a potential penalty. The incident began when Liam Lawson crashed, prompting the marshals to display the red flag. At that moment, Hamilton was not on a flying lap and had not overtaken any cars after the session was interrupted.
However, on-board footage clearly shows that the British driver accelerated immediately after passing the scene of the accident. His speed quickly drew attention from journalists, team personnel, and the race stewards. Car #44 was first noticed, and a few minutes later, it was announced that the matter would be thoroughly investigated after the session.
Lewis Hamilton case: FIA decision on the red flag
Recent precedents are clear but do not necessarily reflect what happened in this case. Both Oliver Bearman and Yuki Tsunoda received 10-place grid penalties, respectively in Monaco and Canada. In both instances, however, the penalties were due to overtaking under red flag conditions.
Here is the FIA’s decision regarding Hamilton in Singapore: no penalty was given to the Ferrari driver, as he respected all required delta times.
