Luca di Montezemolo highlights core issues behind Ferrari’s decline. Former Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo weighs in on the team's ongoing struggles.

Ferrari F1 pitwall

In recent weeks, he has been one of the most interviewed figures in the Formula 1 world. Returning to the paddock more than ten years after his last appearance, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has made several statements, most of them addressing Ferrari’s struggles.

The former Ferrari president, who left in 2014, had stayed away from racing for a long time before returning during the Bahrain GP weekend. His return stirred controversy, especially due to his harsh comments aimed at the very team he once led.

These remarks did not sit well with the Tifosi, particularly given Ferrari’s current difficulties. Despite entering the Sakhir tests as early favourites, the SF-25 has fallen short of expectations.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc quickly realised they had a car with several limitations and a gap of a few tenths to close in order to challenge McLaren at the front. Ferrari’s engineers are working to recover that gap, with updates expected at the Imola round.

In recent weeks, however, the first signs of improvement have appeared, especially from Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver, thanks in part to the now well-known “direction found,” seems to have figured out how to maximise the car’s potential—something fans hope Lewis Hamilton can achieve too.

Meanwhile, as mentioned at the beginning, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo continues to comment on Ferrari. “The team has needed leadership for years. Yes, it’s the soul that’s missing. In the past, people worked day and night and the company was synonymous with passion. Now, they seem to be chasing success without any real plan,” said the former Ferrari boss.

His words echo previous statements and are unlikely to help a team that, at this moment, simply needs the calm environment necessary to work at its best.
