Artificial intelligence combined with the creativity of internet users can produce unexpected results. This is the case with a new video going viral on social media—a clip, modeled after the Formula 1 opening titles, that presents some of the key figures in the upcoming conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor.
On May 7, the Sistine Chapel will announce the traditional phrase “Extra Omnes,” meaning “Everyone Out.” This will kick off the conclave of 135 cardinal electors who will choose the 267th Pope in history. Some F1 fans had fun imagining a motorsport-themed introduction for the “race” to St. Peter’s.
The video, which appeared in recent days on social networks, showcases some of the members of the College of Cardinals who will elect the next Bishop of Rome. In the presentation, organized in the style of Formula 1 session opening titles, several of the most likely candidates appear.
From Hungarian Peter Erdo to Italians Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Matteo Maria Zuppi, and Pietro Parolin, as well as Luis Antonio Tagle and Robert Sarah. The most prominent candidates, according to the media, appear in the AI-generated video making the rounds on social media.
The cardinals, shown in the clip in their “AI” version, take on the classic poses that F1 drivers assume in the opening titles. The individual segments for each papabile are paired with the typical graphics of Formula 1’s official intro—and, of course, set to Brian Tyler’s iconic theme music.
