Juan Pablo Montoya sparks controversy with Lewis Hamilton “battery dominance” claim. Juan Pablo Montoya weighs in on F1 hybrid era and Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari performance.

Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari 2026 F1

Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has offered a provocative take on the current technical direction of the sport, suggesting that if Formula 1 were purely decided by battery management, Lewis Hamilton would be dominating every race on the grid. His comments come amid growing debate over how modern hybrid power units influence performance in the current era of F1.

Montoya highlighted that Ferrari, along with Red Bull Racing, may actually hold an advantage in energy harvesting compared to Mercedes, despite the latter still being widely regarded as having one of the strongest overall power units in Formula 1. According to the Colombian former driver, the real differentiators in 2026 Formula 1 are increasingly found in how efficiently teams recover and deploy electrical energy rather than pure combustion performance alone.

Lewis Hamilton’s early period at Ferrari has already provided plenty of competitive storylines, particularly in his on-track battles with Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Their internal duel has become one of the standout narratives of the season, with both drivers pushing the limits of the SF-26 package in different phases of races, especially during energy deployment windows.

Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane even admitted that the intensity of the Ferrari internal fight occasionally drew attention away from his own operational responsibilities, underlining how closely the paddock is watching the dynamic between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Juan Pablo Montoya challenges “battery world championship” claim

Speaking to AS Colombia, Juan Pablo Montoya observed that Lewis Hamilton often appears to have more usable energy available during critical phases of a race compared to his rivals, a factor he believes reflects both Ferrari’s efficiency in energy recovery and the Briton’s rapid adaptation to the current hybrid-era Formula 1 regulations.

The former F1 race winner previously suggested that Lewis Hamilton has been particularly effective at exploiting the nuances of the current technical rules, especially by attacking in unconventional areas of the circuit while competitors are still managing energy recovery phases.

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has previously described modern Formula 1 as a “battery world championship” due to the sport’s increasing reliance on hybrid energy systems, which now account for nearly half of total power output. However, Juan Pablo Montoya strongly disagrees with the idea that this alone determines success in Formula 1.

He explained that if Formula 1 were truly defined by battery performance alone, Lewis Hamilton would theoretically be winning every race given his apparent efficiency in energy usage and availability during races.

“If it were just about recharging batteries, the Mercedes wouldn’t necessarily be so far ahead because, from what people are saying, Red Bull is one of the best at recharging their batteries, and Ferrari too,” Juan Pablo Montoya stated.

He continued by specifically referencing the British driver’s performance: “Lewis Hamilton always seems to have much more battery than the other drivers and he does a good job. So, based on that, Lewis Hamilton should be winning every race and he isn’t.”

Ferrari F1 2026 challenges and deployment concerns for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc

While Ferrari may be strong in terms of energy harvesting, both Lewis Hamilton and his Maranello teammate have reportedly encountered recurring issues with power deployment, particularly on long straights where performance consistency becomes critical.

Lewis Hamilton notably expressed frustration during the Japanese Grand Prix, where he reported a lack of straight-line performance en route to a disappointing sixth-place finish. These concerns have highlighted that while Ferrari’s hybrid system may be efficient in recovery, its real-world deployment under race conditions still requires refinement.

Ferrari’s technical department will have access to Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO), granted due to their performance gap to Mercedes under the current regulatory framework. This additional development freedom is expected to focus heavily on optimizing energy deployment strategies and improving consistency across different circuit layouts.

Like all teams on the grid, Ferrari is currently awaiting further clarification on potential regulatory adjustments that could influence future development direction. Any changes to Formula 1 2026 rules are expected to have a direct impact on how the Scuderia evolves its power unit concept, with a particular focus on balancing energy recovery and deployment efficiency for both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
