Charles Leclerc’s long-term Formula 1 journey with Ferrari continues to be a major talking point in the paddock, as questions grow over whether his career achievements would look very different had he competed for Red Bull or Mercedes instead of remaining with the Maranello-based team.
Former Formula 1 driver Christian Danner has suggested that Charles Leclerc may have already secured significantly more titles and race victories if he had spent his prime years driving for dominant teams such as Red Bull Racing or Mercedes, rather than enduring a challenging period of inconsistency at Ferrari.
Now entering his eighth season with Ferrari in 2026, Charles Leclerc has still not been able to mount a sustained Formula 1 World Championship challenge. Despite flashes of exceptional pace, the Monegasque driver’s progress has repeatedly been limited by a combination of underperforming Ferrari machinery, strategic missteps, and occasional driver errors under pressure.
The 2025 Formula 1 season proved particularly difficult for Ferrari, as the team failed to secure a single race victory. While expectations have improved slightly with the introduction of the SF-26 car in 2026, Ferrari remains locked in a competitive midfield-to-podium battle, currently trailing both Mercedes and Red Bull in overall performance consistency.
Within the team, Charles Leclerc is engaged in a highly competitive internal dynamic alongside seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who joined Ferrari as part of the team’s major restructuring efforts. Although Lewis Hamilton has brought significant experience and technical feedback, Ferrari still lacks the outright performance needed to consistently challenge for wins at the front of the Formula 1 grid.
Christian Danner’s assessment of Charles Leclerc’s career trajectory
Christian Danner reportedly expressed the view that Charles Leclerc is often underrated when evaluating pure driving performance, particularly in qualifying sessions where the Ferrari package has not always allowed him to fully demonstrate his potential.
According to Christian Danner’s analysis, a driver of the Monegasque’s caliber would likely already possess multiple major Formula 1 successes if he had spent several seasons with a consistently dominant team such as Red Bull Racing or Mercedes, instead of Ferrari during its more inconsistent modern era.
Christian Danner also suggested that Ferrari’s ongoing technical and operational limitations have repeatedly restricted Charles Leclerc’s ability to convert raw speed into championship-contending results. These limitations, combined with evolving Formula 1 regulations, have made it increasingly difficult for drivers outside the very top-performing teams to compete for titles.
Despite these challenges, Christian Danner emphasized that Charles Leclerc’s decision to remain at Ferrari has also brought stability, financial security, and a central leadership role within one of Formula 1’s most iconic teams.
He further noted that Ferrari are fully aware of Charles Leclerc’s value as a driver, both in terms of performance and marketability, which is reflected in his long-term contract reportedly running until 2029. However, speculation continues that the Monegasque driver could explore contractual exit options as early as 2026 if competitive progress does not meet expectations.
Transfer speculation involving Red Bull, Mercedes, and Charles Leclerc
Reports have previously indicated that the Austrian side made contact with Charles Leclerc’s management during a period of uncertainty regarding Max Verstappen’s long-term future. While no move materialized, the interest highlighted how highly the Ferrari driver is rated within rival teams.
At the same time, Mercedes has also been repeatedly linked with top-level driver market discussions, particularly as the team evaluates long-term succession planning around its evolving Formula 1 project alongside Lewis Hamilton’s continued influence within the sport.
Christian Danner suggested that the 28-year-old may now find himself at a crossroads, balancing loyalty to Ferrari against the possibility of joining a team with a stronger immediate chance of winning Formula 1 championships.
However, he also implied that waiting may ultimately be the most rational approach for Charles Leclerc, especially given Ferrari’s gradual improvements with the SF-26 project and the possibility of a more competitive car in future regulation cycles.
Christian Danner on Charles Leclerc’s “smartest” long-term decision
Christian Danner reportedly concluded that Charles Leclerc’s current strategy of remaining patient at Ferrari could be considered the most sensible option available at this stage of his Formula 1 career.
He explained that while a move to Red Bull Racing or Mercedes might appear attractive in theory, the constantly shifting competitive landscape of Formula 1 makes timing extremely difficult. A team that is dominant one season may struggle the next, making long-term decisions highly complex for elite drivers such as Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Christian Danner also suggested that Ferrari’s gradual development trajectory means Charles Leclerc could still find himself in the right place at the right time if the team successfully converts its technical progress into consistent race-winning performance.
Christian Danner therefore indicated that Charles Leclerc’s situation represents a carefully balanced compromise between ambition and stability. While questions will continue to be raised about what might have been achieved at Red Bull Racing or Mercedes, the Ferrari driver remains fully committed to his current project alongside Lewis Hamilton as the team pushes to return to Formula 1 championship contention.
