Max Verstappen to Ferrari? Why a potential Charles Leclerc exit could reshape the Scuderia’s future
The Formula 1 driver market could be heading toward a major shake-up, with fresh speculation linking Max Verstappen to Ferrari in a scenario that would dramatically alter the balance of power on the grid. Former Renault driver and F1 analyst Jolyon Palmer has suggested that the Scuderia should make a decisive move for the Dutchman if he opts to leave Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2026 season.
Uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen’s long-term future in Formula 1 continues to grow, largely driven by his well-documented dissatisfaction with the 2026 technical regulations. The four-time world champion has repeatedly raised concerns about the direction of the sport, particularly regarding energy management and overall car characteristics. His proactive involvement in discussions with the FIA has highlighted both his commitment to improving Formula 1 and his willingness to challenge the status quo.
Despite his continued passion for racing, questions remain over whether Max Verstappen will stay with Red Bull Racing beyond 2026. Performance clauses within his contract could allow him to explore alternative options, and ongoing speculation has linked him with several top teams. One widely discussed possibility involves a future reunion with race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who is reportedly set to join McLaren in 2028. However, while this scenario has gained traction in the paddock, not everyone is convinced it represents the most likely destination.
Jolyon Palmer, offering his analysis on the evolving driver market, indicated that Ferrari could emerge as a more realistic and compelling option for Max Verstappen. In his view, the Italian team may find itself in a position where a major driver change becomes both necessary and strategically advantageous, particularly if Charles Leclerc decides to reassess his future.
Charles Leclerc remains under contract with Ferrari until 2029, but the agreement reportedly includes performance-related exit clauses that could come into play as early as 2026. After several seasons of fluctuating competitiveness and missed opportunities, there is increasing speculation that the Monegasque could evaluate alternative pathways if Ferrari fails to deliver a genuine title-contending car under the new regulations.
At the same time, Lewis Hamilton appears to have found renewed motivation following his move to Ferrari for the 2025 season. The seven-time world champion has shown strong commitment to the project, and early indications suggest that Lewis Hamilton could extend his stay into 2027 as he continues to push for further success with the Maranello-based team. This creates an intriguing dynamic within Ferrari, where experience and youth are currently balanced, but where future decisions could reshape the lineup.
According to Jolyon Palmer’s interpretation, if Charles Leclerc were to activate an exit clause or otherwise depart Ferrari, the team would have little choice but to pursue Max Verstappen aggressively. He suggested that, in such a scenario, Ferrari would view Max Verstappen as the ideal candidate to lead the team into a new competitive cycle, given his proven ability to extract maximum performance and deliver consistent results at the highest level.
Palmer also indicated that a move to McLaren would be less straightforward for Max Verstappen, primarily because of the stability and strength of the current McLaren driver lineup. Unless one of their drivers were to leave, the opportunity for Max Verstappen to join the Woking-based team would be limited. By contrast, Ferrari could present a clearer pathway, especially if a vacancy were to emerge alongside Lewis Hamilton.
Ferrari’s long-standing admiration for the four-time F1 world champion is well documented. Piero Ferrari has reportedly followed the Dutch driver’s career closely since his breakthrough victory at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, recognizing his exceptional talent from an early stage. This sustained interest suggests that, should the opportunity arise, Ferrari would seriously consider making a move to secure his services.
From a competitive standpoint, Ferrari has made noticeable progress under the 2026 regulations, consistently finishing on the podium in the early races of the season. However, the team has yet to demonstrate the outright pace required to challenge consistently for race wins and world championships. This gap between competitiveness and dominance remains a key factor in shaping both Charles Leclerc’s and Lewis Hamilton’s long-term outlook.
Former F1 driver Martin Brundle has also suggested that Max Verstappen is likely to be monitoring Ferrari’s trajectory closely as he evaluates his options. The Dutchman’s decision will ultimately depend not only on contractual opportunities but also on which team can offer the most competitive package in the evolving regulatory landscape.
Nevertheless, doubts remain regarding whether Max Verstappen would be fully convinced by a move to Ferrari. The Scuderia has not secured a drivers’ championship since Kimi Räikkönen’s title-winning campaign in 2007, a statistic that continues to weigh heavily on its reputation. For a driver of Max Verstappen’s calibre, the guarantee of immediate competitiveness is likely to be a decisive factor.
As the 2026 season unfolds and the development race intensifies, the possibility of a high-profile transfer involving Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton adds another layer of intrigue to an already fascinating Formula 1 landscape. Should Ferrari fail to deliver a championship-winning car, the door could open to one of the most significant driver moves in recent history—one that could redefine the competitive order at the very top of the sport.
