Antonelli in Ferrari, is it possible?
For too many years, Italy has lacked a driver capable of competing at the very top of Formula 1. The last Italian to win a Grand Prix was Giancarlo Fisichella—an achievement from 20 years ago—while to find the last compatriot to become world champion, we have to go back to the pioneering era of F1, with Alberto Ascari’s 1953 title. Now, however, hope is returning, as Kimi Antonelli is progressing rapidly and has already brought the Italian tricolor back to the podium in his debut season.
If the indications from testing are confirmed, the 19-year-old from Bologna could be driving a highly competitive Mercedes, potentially the favorite for the World Championship. He will face even greater pressure than the already enormous expectations of replacing Lewis Hamilton, who moved to Ferrari. And Ferrari itself is watching Antonelli’s rise with keen interest.
The words of Ferrari
“It’s not a forbidden dream; there have already been Italian drivers in Ferrari. The last one who tried was a dear friend, Michele Alboreto, and he didn’t succeed. Kimi Antonelli has already shown that he deserves top-tier cars: with a bit of experience, he will certainly become a great driver,” said Vice President Piero Ferrari in an interview with the Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport conducted by journalist Fulvio Solms.
In short, Kimi Antonelli represents a long-term objective for Ferrari. The Scuderia already has a promising young talent in-house, Oliver Bearman, along with a driver like Charles Leclerc, who still has several high-level seasons ahead. The vice president praised Antonelli further: “He is an incredibly fast driver, as shown by comparisons with his teammates. He extracts performance from any car at any time. For me, he is a certainty. What remains is the satisfaction of seeing him become a world champion because he deserves it, and also for his strong attachment to Ferrari.”
The prospect of an Italian prodigy in a scarlet cockpit is a narrative that transcends mere sport, tapping into the very soul of the Tifosi. While Kimi Antonelli is currently spearheading the Mercedes challenge in the 2026 era, Piero Ferrari’s “forbidden dream” comment suggests that the doors at Maranello are never truly closed to homegrown talent. For now, the focus remains on the immediate battle between the W17 and the SF-26, but the long-term roadmap for the Scuderia seems to include a very distinct Italian flavor. Whether it’s Charles Leclerc finally securing his legacy or Kimi Antonelli following in the footsteps of Ascari, the future of the Prancing Horse has rarely looked more vibrant.
