Jacques Villeneuve Warns of Rising Tension Between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari in 2025
Jacques Villeneuve has expressed concern that Ferrari may not be receiving the performance they expected from Lewis Hamilton during the 2025 Formula 1 season, suggesting frustration is mounting within the Maranello camp. The seven-time world champion joined the Italian team at the start of the season with the intention of reigniting his career after a decline in form during his final years at Mercedes.
Hamilton signed a lucrative £39 million-per-year contract with Ferrari in February 2024, following two consecutive winless seasons at Mercedes. Historically, Lewis Hamilton had never endured a winless season before 2022, yet he now faces the possibility of a third straight year without a Grand Prix victory in his first term with the Scuderia. Through the first 14 rounds of the season, the Briton has yet to reach the podium, marking a career first in the modern F1 points era.
The Briton’s difficulties reached a peak ahead of the summer break, notably at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he described himself as “useless” after qualifying 12th and finishing in the same position. These comments, combined with his remark that Ferrari “need to change driver,” highlighted the scale of his frustration and drew significant attention from the F1 paddock.
Jacques Villeneuve Concerned Over Hamilton’s Call for a ‘Reset’ at Ferrari
Hamilton’s statement that he now requires a “reset” before the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort has intensified Villeneuve’s concerns. With 10 rounds remaining in the 2025 season, the Formula 1 circus has regrouped in the Netherlands, and the former world champion worries about the underlying issues affecting both Hamilton and Ferrari.
Villeneuve has also highlighted the apparent lack of alignment between the Briton, his teammate Charles Leclerc, and their respective race engineers. Since joining Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has frequently clashed with chief race engineer Riccardo Adami, while Charles Leclerc has had his own disagreements with engineer Bryan Bozzi. This has, according to Villeneuve, led to communication breakdowns and a lack of cohesion within the team.
Speaking on Sky Sports F1, Jacques Villeneuve suggested that both Ferrari and Hamilton are not fully aligned in their objectives: “They’re not getting what they signed. There’s clear frustration on both sides. Hamilton is not receiving the car performance he expected, and the team feels he is not fully with them. There is no chemistry, and it’s evident when he communicates with his engineer on race day. It’s almost as if they are on different planets. The same goes for Charles Leclerc and his engineer. Something unusual is happening within Ferrari that is preventing progress in the right direction. Lewis doesn’t appear excited or fully invested in his interviews. It seems like he’s not eager to go to work. It’s very strange.”
Hamilton Faces Challenges Adapting to Ferrari’s Methods
The difficulties stem in part from Hamilton’s adaptation to Ferrari’s car and operational methods, which differ significantly from what he experienced at Mercedes. Ferrari represents the first non-British team Lewis Hamilton has raced for after 12 years with the Brackley-based Mercedes squad and six years at McLaren, creating a steep learning curve.
Hamilton has reportedly identified multiple areas for improvement within Ferrari, comparing the team’s resources and technical support to his previous experiences. He has provided Ferrari with detailed reports and suggestions to help the team close the gap to the front of the grid, emphasizing his commitment to restoring their competitiveness.
Despite these efforts, Jacques Villeneuve’s observations raise the possibility that Ferrari and Hamilton may not be fully aligned on their long-term objectives. Addressing the lack of chemistry between driver and team will be critical, particularly with the upcoming 2026 F1 regulation changes that promise a new technical landscape. Both Hamilton and Ferrari will need to rebuild trust and collaboration to maximize performance in the closing stages of the 2025 season and lay the foundation for future success.
