Charles Leclerc Reflects on Red Bull Dominance and McLaren’s Rise in 2025 F1 Season
During the period of Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing’s near-total dominance following Formula 1’s major regulatory overhaul in 2022, few could imagine the team losing its grip at the top of the sport. The Dutch driver and his team had set a standard that seemed almost impossible to challenge, winning race after race and redefining consistency in the hybrid era.
Max Verstappen secured three consecutive world championships following his first title in the 2021 season, where he controversially dethroned Lewis Hamilton at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Despite their early supremacy, signs of vulnerability began emerging in the 2024 season, and Red Bull have since been challenged for their top position by McLaren, whose MCL39 has consistently outperformed the reigning champions in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.
The Dutchman’s confidence in certain Red Bull personnel has reportedly waned, and the prospect of equaling Michael Schumacher’s record of five consecutive championships now appears increasingly unlikely. Red Bull have attempted to regain momentum in the current 2025 season, but McLaren’s remarkable form has proven a formidable obstacle through the first 14 rounds, showcasing the team’s evolution and strategic excellence.
Leclerc Admits He Underestimated McLaren’s Performance
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has acknowledged that his previous statements about Red Bull’s invincibility were incorrect. Speaking to journalists ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Charles Leclerc reflected on his earlier predictions about the grid’s competitiveness. Previously, he believed no team could match Red Bull’s pace, but McLaren’s dominance this year has forced him to reconsider his position.
The Monegasque indicated to the Italian media that he now regrets using definitive language in the past, emphasizing that McLaren’s unexpected rise was the “big surprise” of the season. He noted that while Ferrari had anticipated a closer fight in the final year of the current regulations, McLaren had uncovered performance advantages that others had not, particularly in tyre management and race strategy. The 27-year-old admitted that while Ferrari must strive to catch up, the timing and development gap make this challenge especially difficult.
Leclerc’s 2023 Assessment of Red Bull’s Unmatched Pace
Charles Leclerc’s recent admissions build on his comments from the 2023 season, when he highlighted Red Bull’s significant performance margin over the rest of the grid. Following a race in Belgium where Max Verstappen’s lead was nearly 30 seconds over his rivals, Charles Leclerc explained to RaceFans that closing the gap to Red Bull would be extremely challenging before the next regulatory changes. He emphasized that while qualifying sessions appeared closer, Red Bull’s advantage was far more pronounced during race conditions, underscoring the Dutch team’s race-day superiority.
He explained that Red Bull’s dominance was not just about outright speed but also about superior race pace management, with their cars excelling in tyre conservation and energy deployment, leaving competitors scrambling to match their consistency across race stints.
Ferrari Aims to Counter McLaren’s Advantage
Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur has identified the key area where McLaren has outshone rivals this season: exceptional tyre preservation. According to the French manager, McLaren’s ability to maintain tyre performance deeper into race stints has allowed the MCL39 to extract maximum efficiency from Pirelli tyres, giving them a decisive edge over both Red Bull and Ferrari in longer runs.
