Haas are reportedly pushing to keep Rafael Câmara in their Formula 1 car for every remaining race of the 2026 season, rather than limiting the Ferrari Driver Academy youngster’s debut to the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos. The American team would like the Brazilian to compete in Las Vegas and potentially Qatar and Abu Dhabi, should the Middle Eastern races go ahead, giving him valuable experience before his first full F1 campaign in 2027.
However, the proposed early promotion presents a major dilemma for Rafael Câmara, who is also fighting for the Formula 2 championship. With just seven points separating him from Nikola Tsolov, committing to Haas for the remainder of the Formula 1 season could force the Brazilian to abandon his F2 title challenge.
Haas wants Rafael Câmara for all remaining 2026 F1 races
Every racing driver dreams of making their Formula 1 debut, but for Rafael Câmara, the opportunity carries even greater significance. The Brazilian is preparing to make his first Grand Prix appearance on home soil at Interlagos, an especially memorable setting for the Ferrari Driver Academy graduate.
Having been selected by Haas to replace Esteban Ocon for the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship, Rafael Câmara is making his debut earlier than originally planned. His opportunity has come following a heated dispute between Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu and Esteban Ocon, which resulted in the French driver’s dismissal.
The Brazilian Grand Prix might not be Rafael Câmara’s only Formula 1 appearance this year. According to information emerging from the paddock, Haas are seeking to retain the young driver for all the remaining rounds of the championship.
That would mean competing in Las Vegas and, provided the events are confirmed, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The objective would be to accelerate his development and help him become familiar with the car ahead of his first full season as a Haas race driver in 2027.
The prospect of an early promotion follows growing attention surrounding Rafael Câmara’s unexpected Formula 1 opportunity at Interlagos, which has brought forward his transition from Ferrari’s junior development programme to a full-time place on the grid.
Rafael Câmara faces difficult decision over Formula 2 title
There is still no official confirmation that Rafael Câmara will contest the entire remaining Formula 1 calendar, largely because of his ongoing Formula 2 campaign.
The Brazilian would prefer to complete the season in the junior category, where he currently leads the championship standings by seven points over Nikola Tsolov. Giving up that advantage would be a significant sporting sacrifice at such an important stage of his career.
If Rafael Câmara were to begin racing full-time in Formula 1 immediately, he would be unable to compete in the Formula 2 rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. That would almost certainly mean relinquishing his opportunity to win the championship.
There is, however, uncertainty surrounding the Middle Eastern events because of the ongoing conflict in the region. Should Formula 1’s commercial rights holder, Liberty Media, decide against exposing drivers, teams and personnel to unnecessary risks by proceeding with those races, the situation could change.
Four F1 races could give Ferrari junior an advantage for 2027
If Haas succeed in their plans, Rafael Câmara could complete four Grands Prix before the end of 2026, gaining valuable competitive experience and a much clearer understanding of the Formula 1 car before the start of his rookie campaign.
Such a programme would give the Brazilian an opportunity to familiarise himself with the machinery, the demands of Grand Prix racing and the team’s working procedures before entering his first full championship.
For Ferrari, the development would represent another important step in the progression of a driver who has emerged through its academy system, following the established pathway from Maranello’s junior programme to Haas.
Should Rafael Câmara commit to the remaining Formula 1 races, his seat at Invicta Racing in Formula 2 would be taken by Freddie Slater, who finished second in the Formula 3 championship behind Ugo Ugochukwu.
The decision therefore involves two competing priorities: completing a potentially title-winning Formula 2 campaign or gaining an early start in Formula 1. Haas are pushing for the latter option, but the Brazilian’s immediate racing programme remains subject to confirmation.
