Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has outlined the Maranello team’s position on the possibility of Rafael Câmara making an early Formula 1 debut with Haas at the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix. The Brazilian youngster is already set to join the American outfit for the 2027 season, but the uncertainty surrounding Esteban Ocon’s immediate future has raised the prospect of an earlier opportunity.
Haas unexpectedly replaced Esteban Ocon with Ryo Hirakawa at the Mexico City Grand Prix, where the Japanese driver secured tenth place on his first Grand Prix appearance. With calls emerging for the team to terminate Ocon’s contract, attention has turned to whether Ferrari would allow Câmara to begin his Formula 1 career before his planned full-time debut next year. Vasseur has made it clear that the decision belongs to Haas, while emphasising his support for the young Brazilian.
Fred Vasseur explains Ferrari’s stance on Rafael Câmara joining Haas early
The possibility of Rafael Câmara competing at Interlagos has become particularly interesting because the next race takes place in his home country. An early promotion would allow the Ferrari Driver Academy youngster to make his Formula 1 debut in front of Brazilian supporters rather than waiting until the beginning of 2027.
However, there are several considerations before such a move could take place, including the responsibilities Câmara still has within Ferrari’s development programme and his ongoing Formula 2 campaign.
Brazilian Formula 1 journalist Julianne Cerasoli investigated the situation following the Mexico City Grand Prix, seeking clarification from both Ferrari and its team principal.
According to Cerasoli, information available to her on Sunday indicated that Haas had not contacted Ferrari about allowing Câmara to compete at the São Paulo Grand Prix or any of the subsequent rounds. Ferrari had also confirmed directly to the journalist that no such approach had been received.
Cerasoli explained that Haas would need Ferrari to release Câmara from his existing commitments before the Brazilian could race for the American team.
She subsequently questioned Fred Vasseur about whether the Scuderia would consider releasing its young driver early and whether such an arrangement would make sense from Ferrari’s perspective.
The French team principal expressed his support for Câmara but emphasised that he would not interfere with decisions made by Haas. He also pointed out that the Brazilian first needed to complete his Formula 2 season.
Vasseur’s position therefore places responsibility for any early promotion with Haas rather than Ferrari. While the Scuderia supports its academy driver’s progression, the American outfit must first decide whether it wants to change its line-up before the end of 2026.
Ferrari has already invested in preparing Câmara for the next stage of his career, with Fred Vasseur previously outlining the team’s substantial backing for the Brazilian’s Formula 1 ambitions.
Esteban Ocon’s Haas situation opens the door to a possible early F1 debut
The uncertainty began when Haas decided not to field Esteban Ocon at the Mexican Grand Prix, replacing the Frenchman with Ryo Hirakawa without providing an explanation for the decision.
Hirakawa took advantage of the opportunity by finishing tenth, scoring a point on his Grand Prix debut. The result added another dimension to the debate surrounding Haas’s driver choices for the remainder of the season.
Following the Mexico City race, calls emerged for Haas to terminate Ocon’s agreement. Such a decision could create an immediate vacancy, potentially allowing the team to accelerate its plans for 2027.
Rafael Câmara would be an obvious candidate to consider, given that he has already been confirmed as a Haas driver for next season. Rather than waiting until his first full campaign, the Brazilian could potentially gain experience during the final four Grands Prix of 2026.
Another name linked with a possible replacement is Jack Doohan, with suggestions that he could be considered for the São Paulo Grand Prix.
Nevertheless, Câmara appears the more logical option from a longer-term perspective. With Haas already planning to field the Ferrari junior in 2027, giving him an early opportunity would allow the team to begin working with a driver who is expected to become part of its future line-up.
The potential change would also build on the existing relationship between Ferrari and Haas, which has played an important role in Câmara’s development. His progress towards a full-time Formula 1 opportunity has been closely followed, including the support and wider considerations surrounding his proposed Haas move.
Why the Brazilian Grand Prix could be the ideal starting point for Rafael Câmara
The timing of the possible promotion makes the situation particularly significant. Formula 1 heads next to the Autódromo José Carlos Pace at Interlagos for the São Paulo Grand Prix, giving Câmara the prospect of making his first race appearance on home soil.
For a Brazilian driver preparing to enter Formula 1, competing at Interlagos would represent a memorable opportunity. It would also provide a demanding introduction to the championship as Haas prepares for the final stages of the season.
Beyond the emotional significance, an early debut could have practical benefits.
If Câmara were permitted to contest the four remaining Grands Prix, he would have the opportunity to familiarise himself with Haas’s 2026 car, experience race-weekend procedures and begin adapting to the demands of Formula 1 competition.
The experience could prove particularly valuable ahead of 2027, when the Brazilian is scheduled to begin his first full season with the team.
However, expectations would need to remain realistic. There is considerable excitement surrounding Câmara’s potential, but adapting to Formula 1 takes time, especially under the current technical regulations, which have already presented difficulties for drivers with significantly more experience.
Allowing the youngster sufficient time to understand the machinery and settle into his new environment would therefore be essential, regardless of whether his debut takes place in Brazil or at the beginning of next season.
For supporters following the possibility of a home Grand Prix appearance, the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix timetable provides the complete schedule for practice, qualifying and Sunday’s race.
Haas faces an important decision before Rafael Câmara’s 2027 arrival
From Haas’s perspective, promoting Rafael Câmara before the end of 2026 could offer an opportunity to begin preparations for the following championship considerably earlier than originally expected.
Four Grands Prix would provide the Brazilian with valuable mileage and allow him to gain experience of competitive Formula 1 racing before the start of his first full campaign.
It could also help the team understand how quickly its future driver adapts to the demands of the category and identify areas requiring further development.
Yet the decision cannot be taken by Ferrari alone. As Fred Vasseur has emphasised, Haas must determine its own driver arrangements, while the Scuderia’s immediate concern includes allowing Câmara to complete his Formula 2 commitments.
For the Italian team, the priority remains supporting the progression of one of its young talents without interfering in the sporting decisions of its Formula 1 partner.
An early appearance at Interlagos would give Rafael Câmara an important head start before 2027, but the next move must come from Haas. Whether that opportunity materialises could depend on how the American team chooses to resolve the uncertainty surrounding Esteban Ocon’s position.
