Ferrari on 30 August: Kimi Räikkönen’s 2009 victory at Spa
On 30 August 2009, Kimi Räikkönen won the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The result became Ferrari’s only Formula 1 victory of the season and added another Spa success to the Finnish driver’s career.
Other Belgian Grands Prix held on this date produced much more difficult outcomes for Ferrari, making the 2009 victory the standout racing anniversary.

2009: Ferrari returns to the top step at Spa
Kimi Räikkönen finished ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella to win the Belgian Grand Prix. Luca Badoer finished fourteenth in the other Ferrari.
The result was an important success during a challenging season for the Scuderia. Rather than forming part of a sustained winning run, Spa remained Ferrari’s sole Grand Prix victory in 2009.
A final victory from Kimi Räikkönen’s first Ferrari spell
The Belgian win was Kimi Räikkönen’s last victory during his first period racing for Ferrari, which ended after the 2009 season. He later returned to the team in 2014.
His next Ferrari victory came at the 2018 United States Grand Prix. The gap between those wins gives Spa a distinct place in the story of his two spells at Maranello.
Contrasting Belgian results and a driver birthday
Both Ferraris retired from the Belgian Grands Prix held on 30 August in 1992 and 1998. In 2020, Sebastian Vettel finished thirteenth and Charles Leclerc fourteenth.
The date also marks the birthday of Ignazio Giunti, born in 1941, whose Formula 1 appearances included races for Ferrari.
