Methodology: Grand Prix starts, points, constructor breakdowns and season summaries are calculated from locally processed F1DB race and Sprint results. Points use the same race-result definition across career, Ferrari, constructor and season views so the totals reconcile. Official season championship points are retained separately and noted where historical dropped-score rules create a difference. Career wins, podiums, poles and fastest laps use F1DB driver-level totals where available.

Didier Pironi Formula 1 career statistics

Didier Pironi competed in Formula 1 from 1978 through 1982. His career included Tyrrell, Ligier and Ferrari.

He recorded three victories, 13 podium finishes, four pole positions and five fastest laps from 70 official starts.

Didier Pironi at Tyrrell

Pironi entered Formula 1 with Tyrrell in 1978 and spent two seasons with the team.

He recorded his first Formula 1 podium finishes during the 1979 season before moving to Ligier.

Didier Pironi’s first Formula 1 victory

Pironi joined Ligier for 1980 and immediately became a regular front-running driver.

He recorded his first Formula 1 victory during that season and finished fifth in the Drivers’ Championship with 32 points.

Didier Pironi joins Ferrari

Pironi moved to Ferrari for the 1981 season and partnered Gilles Villeneuve.

His first Ferrari campaign produced nine points and one fastest lap but no podium finishes or victories.

Didier Pironi’s 1982 Ferrari season

Ferrari became substantially more competitive in 1982, and Pironi emerged as a Drivers’ Championship contender.

He recorded two victories, six podium finishes, two pole positions and two fastest laps during the season, scoring 39 points.

Didier Pironi wins the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix

Pironi recorded his first Ferrari victory at the 1982 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.

He finished ahead of Ferrari team-mate Gilles Villeneuve after position changes during the closing stages, an outcome that created a major dispute between the two drivers.

Didier Pironi wins the 1982 Dutch Grand Prix

Pironi’s second Ferrari victory came at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

The result became the third and final Formula 1 victory of his career.

Didier Pironi’s 1982 title challenge

Pironi’s consistent results placed him at the front of the Drivers’ Championship during the middle of the 1982 season.

He scored 39 points despite being unable to contest the final part of the campaign and ultimately finished runner-up to Keke Rosberg.

Didier Pironi’s final Formula 1 weekend

Pironi suffered a major accident during qualifying for the 1982 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. The injuries prevented him from taking the race start and ended his Formula 1 racing career.

He did not return to a Formula 1 Grand Prix after the accident.

Why Didier Pironi has 27 Ferrari entries but 25 starts

Pironi’s Ferrari record contains two events that did not become official race starts during the 1982 season.
