Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna has spoken about the challenges faced by the team throughout this Formula 1 season and acknowledged the weaknesses that have emerged when compared to rival teams.
The 2025 season has been far from easy for Scuderia Ferrari. The team began the year with high hopes and world championship ambitions following the intense battle with McLaren for the Constructors’ title, which they narrowly lost by just twelve points. Yet, the leadership at Maranello has rarely addressed the situation publicly. This time, however, Benedetto Vigna has decided to clarify what he sees as the main weaknesses within the Italian squad and to shed light on Ferrari’s internal situation.
Throughout the year, Ferrari’s top management has faced criticism for their lack of visibility during the most difficult moments. The Italian company has been increasingly expanding into other areas — notably with the Hypersail sailing project — and more recently, the presentation of its first fully electric car. As a result, Formula 1 has appeared to take a back seat, even if the upper management insists that this is not the case. Now, actions will have to prove it, and the 2026 season will be absolutely crucial to demonstrate Ferrari’s true priorities.
Benedetto Vigna comments on Ferrari’s current situation
“There are other teams where everything seems to run more smoothly than it does for us,” Benedetto Vigna stated. “So we need to make sure that all the ingredients necessary to win are functioning properly. The podium in Mexico makes us happy, but we must keep our feet on the ground. Unfortunately, the season has not gone the way we expected. We will continue to work in a united and cohesive way because there are still four races to go, and we must give our best to see how things end.” These were the words of Ferrari’s CEO, as reported by Leggo.
In essence, Benedetto Vigna has made it clear that Ferrari currently lacks the “ingredients” that rival teams like Red Bull Racing and McLaren have managed to put together so effectively. It is no coincidence that the team’s last world championship title dates back to 2008 — almost two decades ago — a drought that feels far too long for a brand like Ferrari.
So far, the management under John Elkann and Benedetto Vigna has not delivered any major success in Formula 1 — quite the opposite, in fact. As already mentioned, the coming year will be a turning point due to the new regulations set to shake up the competitive order. Ferrari must be ready to seize that opportunity. Back in early 2022, President John Elkann declared that Ferrari would return to winning ways by 2026. With that deadline now fast approaching, there is no more room for error. Given the negative trend of the past seventeen years, the task ahead will be anything but simple. We will soon see how it all unfolds.
