After the impressive box office performance of the first film, it seems increasingly likely that F1: The Movie could become the start of a true saga.
A possible sequel on the way
If you loved the Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, directed by Joseph Kosinski, the news you’re about to read will probably make you happy. Otherwise, you might find it a little irritating. Just like almost everything surrounding the world of Formula 1 in recent years, F1: The Movie has divided fans — some appreciated the idea of bringing the glamour and excitement of Formula 1 to the big screen, while others disliked what they see as another commercial product born under Liberty Media’s management of the sport.
With worldwide earnings of around 630 million dollars against an already high production budget estimated between 250 and 300 million, the film — which tells the story of 50-year-old driver Sonny Hayes — has undoubtedly been a success. And, as often happens in Hollywood when numbers look good, plans for a sequel are already being discussed. The idea, which would surely please Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, was mentioned directly by producer Jerry Bruckheimer in an interview with Forbes. He will also be in Rome on November 3 to present the movie’s release on Apple TV.
Discussions with Lewis Hamilton
“We met with Lewis Hamilton a couple of weeks ago and started discussing some ideas,” Jerry Bruckheimer revealed. Hamilton, who serves as one of the film’s executive producers, played a key role in the creation of the first movie and its authentic representation of Formula 1. “Right now, we’re in London and we’ve been screening the film twice every night for the last three days. We’ve had the public in the room, and the first thing I ask them is: ‘How many of you haven’t seen this film before?’ Eighty percent raise their hands — and that’s amazing. The other 20 percent have already seen it multiple times. Those who haven’t seen it say: ‘Oh, it’s not really my kind of movie.’ And I tell them, ‘Actually, it is your kind of movie.’ It’s thrilling, it’s fun, and it’s a fantastic night out at the cinema,” Jerry Bruckheimer concluded.
