Ferrari is entering a crucial phase in the development of its innovative “Macarena” rear wing, with the Maranello-based team intensifying its efforts during the short break between the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka and the upcoming Miami Grand Prix. The objective is clear: resolve the technical limitations identified during early testing and deliver a refined, near-final specification capable of unlocking a significant performance gain on the SF-26.
The new aerodynamic concept, widely regarded as one of the most ambitious solutions introduced in the 2026 Formula 1 season, has already generated considerable attention within the paddock. However, its initial outings during pre-season testing in Bahrain and limited running in Shanghai highlighted several areas requiring further optimization.
Ferrari targets key improvements before Miami introduction
At Maranello, engineers are focusing on fine-tuning the behavior of the Macarena wing, particularly under braking conditions, where early feedback revealed instability. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc experienced these issues during initial runs, indicating that while the concept offers clear aerodynamic potential, its integration with the overall car balance remains incomplete.
In addition to stability concerns, Ferrari’s technical team is working extensively on improving the timing and efficiency of the flap mechanisms. The aim is to ensure smoother operation, especially during transitions between different aerodynamic states, which is critical for maximizing straight-line speed without compromising cornering performance.
This development phase is considered essential, as the Miami Grand Prix could represent a turning point in Ferrari’s season. Only once a fully optimized version is available will Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc be able to properly exploit the system and evaluate its true competitive value on track.
FIA inspection confirms regulatory compliance
Alongside its internal development work, Ferrari has also undergone a detailed technical review by the FIA. Reports indicate that Federation officials visited the Maranello factory to closely examine the design and functionality of the Macarena wing, ensuring that it adheres to the current aerodynamic regulations governing the 2026 Formula 1 season.
This type of inspection reflects the innovative nature of the component, which has naturally attracted scrutiny due to its unconventional design and potential performance impact. According to the findings, the revised specification has satisfied the regulatory requirements, clearing an important hurdle for its future deployment.
SF-26 upgrade could reshape Ferrari’s performance trajectory
With FIA approval effectively secured, Ferrari can now proceed with greater confidence as it prepares to introduce the upgraded rear wing on the SF-26. The expectation within the team is that, once fully optimized, the Macarena wing could deliver a meaningful improvement in aerodynamic efficiency, particularly in terms of drag reduction and energy management.
In a highly competitive field that includes strong performances from Mercedes, any gain in these areas could prove decisive. For Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, the upcoming Miami weekend may offer the first real opportunity to assess whether this bold technical solution can translate into tangible lap time improvements.
As development continues at pace, Ferrari’s focus remains on eliminating the final weaknesses and ensuring that the Macarena wing becomes a reliable and effective tool in its 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
