Ralf Schumacher is convinced that Kimi Antonelli will eventually leave Mercedes to race for Ferrari, despite having just secured his first Formula 1 World Championship with the Silver Arrows. The former F1 driver believes even Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff will ultimately recognise that the prospect of an Italian world champion representing Ferrari could prove impossible to resist.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli made history at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix by becoming Italy’s first Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. His achievement has transformed him into one of the country’s most celebrated sporting figures, while also reviving speculation about whether Ferrari could one day bring the Italian driver to Maranello. Although Mercedes has played a central role in his development, Schumacher believes that relationship will not necessarily prevent a future move to the Scuderia.
Ralf Schumacher convinced Kimi Antonelli will eventually join Ferrari
Speaking on Sky Germany, in comments reported by F1-Insider, Ralf Schumacher expressed complete confidence that Kimi Antonelli would eventually become a Ferrari driver.
The former Formula 1 racer suggested that such a move was almost inevitable, even joking that an instruction from the Pope to drive for Ferrari would make the situation particularly difficult to resist.
Schumacher also reflected on the emotion displayed by Toto Wolff following Antonelli’s championship triumph. While acknowledging the Mercedes team principal’s extraordinary reaction, he predicted that Wolff would eventually understand that he had to allow the Italian driver to leave.
The prediction is striking given how closely Wolff has been involved in Antonelli’s career. The Austrian has been one of the young driver’s most important supporters, helping him progress through the Mercedes structure and ultimately into Formula 1.
Schumacher’s assessment nevertheless reflects the powerful connection between Ferrari and Italian motorsport. With Antonelli now established as a world champion, the prospect of seeing him compete for the country’s most famous Formula 1 team is likely to generate considerable enthusiasm among Italian supporters.
For the moment, however, the suggestion remains a prediction about Antonelli’s future rather than an indication that a transfer has been agreed.
Toto Wolff played decisive role in Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes career
Any potential Ferrari move would represent a significant development for Mercedes, given the investment Toto Wolff has made in Kimi Antonelli’s progression.
Wolff personally selected the Italian youngster to replace Lewis Hamilton when the seven-time world champion departed Mercedes for Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season.
The decision attracted considerable attention because Antonelli was being entrusted with one of Formula 1’s most demanding seats at an exceptionally early stage of his career.
When questions emerged about whether Mercedes had promoted him too quickly, Wolff continued to support his choice. Even during the difficult periods of Antonelli’s first season, when some observers suggested the gamble had failed, the team principal maintained his confidence in the young Italian.
That backing has now been rewarded with a world championship.
Antonelli has become the fourth driver to win the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship with Mercedes, following Juan Manuel Fangio, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.
His achievement is particularly meaningful because, unlike those previous champions, Antonelli has developed through the Mercedes system from a young age. He represents a driver whose career has been closely connected to the Silver Arrows long before his arrival in Formula 1.
That history helps explain why Wolff would be determined to retain him for the long term. Mercedes has not simply recruited an established champion; it has helped create one.
Yet Schumacher believes the relationship could eventually face the same challenge that emerged when Lewis Hamilton decided to leave Mercedes for Ferrari.
Ferrari previously missed opportunity to sign Kimi Antonelli
The possibility of Antonelli eventually joining Ferrari carries additional significance because the Italian team had an opportunity to recruit him much earlier in his career.
Ferrari declined to take him into its development programme when he was a child, although different accounts have emerged regarding the reasons behind that decision.
According to some versions of the story, concerns were raised about Antonelli’s small physical stature at the time. Other accounts suggest Ferrari was simply unwilling to recruit a driver who was only 11 years old.
Whatever the precise explanation, the decision created an opportunity for Mercedes to secure the young Italian’s services and oversee his development.
His subsequent rise to the world championship has inevitably brought that earlier decision back into focus.
Reports now suggest that Ferrari is interested in signing Antonelli in the future, potentially giving the Maranello team an opportunity to correct what has become a significant missed chance in its driver development history.
The prospect is especially attractive because Antonelli combines Italian nationality with the status of a reigning Formula 1 world champion, a combination that would carry considerable significance for Ferrari and its supporters.
How Kimi Antonelli could affect Ferrari’s future driver line-up
Ferrari’s potential interest in Kimi Antonelli comes at a time when the team already has several important decisions to consider regarding its long-term driver plans.
Charles Leclerc signed a long-term contract extension earlier in 2026, reinforcing his position within the Scuderia. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, is expected to remain with the team for at least one more season.
The current partnership therefore provides Ferrari with continuity, although questions about its future driver hierarchy have intensified as the competition between Hamilton and Leclerc has developed.
The relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc ahead of 2027 has already become an important subject for the team’s management following their controversial on-track encounters.
Ferrari also has promising younger drivers connected to its development programme.
Oliver Bearman, currently competing in Formula 1 with Haas, has been regarded as a potential long-term successor to Hamilton. His experience in the championship makes him an obvious candidate for consideration when a Ferrari seat eventually becomes available.
Another Ferrari-developed talent, Rafael Câmara, is expected to join Bearman on the Formula 1 grid next season, adding another option to the team’s future plans.
However, the opportunity to recruit Antonelli could change those calculations.
If Ferrari were presented with a realistic chance to sign an Italian world champion, the team might reconsider its existing succession strategy, even with Leclerc under a long-term agreement and promising academy graduates progressing towards potential opportunities.
Such a decision would involve balancing continuity, driver development and the possibility of recruiting a proven championship winner.
Kimi Antonelli keeps Ferrari possibility open while remaining loyal to Mercedes
Despite the speculation, Kimi Antonelli has consistently emphasised his appreciation for Mercedes and the opportunities the team has provided.
The Italian has not ruled out the possibility of representing Ferrari at some point in his career. Whenever the subject has been raised, he has expressed respect for the Maranello institution and its place in Formula 1.
At the same time, Antonelli has reiterated his commitment and gratitude to Mercedes, recognising the team’s central role in helping him reach the highest level of motorsport.
Those comments leave open the possibility of a Ferrari move without suggesting that the newly crowned champion is preparing to leave his current team.
For Toto Wolff, retaining Antonelli would mean preserving the partnership that has now delivered Mercedes another world championship. For Ferrari, the attraction lies in the prospect of securing a successful Italian driver whose career could become closely associated with the Prancing Horse.
Ralf Schumacher believes that prospect will eventually become reality. His prediction suggests that even Wolff’s personal investment in Antonelli’s development may not be enough to prevent a future move to Maranello.
Whether Ferrari ever receives that opportunity remains uncertain, but Antonelli’s championship triumph has made the possibility considerably more compelling. The Italian driver has already achieved the ultimate success with Mercedes, and Schumacher is convinced that Ferrari will eventually become another chapter in his Formula 1 career.
