In recent days, the Maranello team has been at the center of various rumors regarding the Formula 1 engineer transfer market.
Aston Martin Tempts Enrico Cardile
In recent days, journalists Roberto Chinchero and Leo Turrini have reported a concrete offer from Lawrence Stroll’s Aston Martin to Enrico Cardile, the technical director of Ferrari. The highly esteemed Italian engineer within the paddock has received a significant proposal from the British team and is currently considering his future.
Enrico Cardile, who turned 49 last April, has been with Ferrari since 2005. The Maranello team invested in him right after his university studies. He first worked on endurance cars, then transitioned to Formula 1 in 2016 under Sergio Marchionne’s horizontal organization. He started as Head of Aero Development, then became Vehicle Project Manager, Head of Aerodynamics, and eventually reached the top of the newly formed Chassis Area in 2021. In 2023, he became Technical Director of Chassis and Aerodynamics.
Rumors of Adrian Newey’s arrival at Maranello prompted Aston Martin to make an offer to Enrico Cardile, aiming for an aggressive internal reorganization. Stroll’s team’s objective is clear: to excel in 2026 when they will have the Honda power unit. Leo Turrini explained that the presence of Roberto Fedeli at Aston Martin, a former Ferrari product manager and mentor to Enrico Cardile, could be a significant factor in his potential move. In this scenario, the Italian engineer would lead the Aston Martin project without an overbearing presence above him, unlike what might happen with Adrian Newey at Ferrari.
And Newey?
As reported by several news media outlets in recent weeks, an official announcement regarding Adrian Newey’s move to Ferrari was not expected soon. The British designer’s presence at the recent Monaco GP in Red Bull attire sparked rumors in various directions. Auto, Motor und Sport, for instance, mentioned that Ferrari is no longer interested in the English engineer, suggesting it might be a classic diversion to calm the waters around Newey’s potential move to Maranello, especially given Red Bull’s obstructionism regarding his gardening leave period, which is a typical part of such negotiations.

F1-Insider then reported that Mercedes had approached Adrian Newey with an offer that included team shares, currently divided equally among the German company, Toto Wolff, and sponsor Ineos. There were also talks of Adrian Newey struggling with the idea of spending much time in Italy, a concern already discussed and resolved between him and Ferrari.
The Maranello team is ready to welcome him as a technical supervisor or in a bespoke role that allows him the freedom to unleash his creativity, including remote work.
Frederic VasseurFrederic Vasseur and Ferrari have maintained a low profile regarding Adrian Newey. However, the rumors about Enrico Cardile’s potential departure add more pieces to an increasingly defined puzzle, without haste, barring any unexpected twists, which currently seem remote.
