Lewis Hamilton is going through difficult days and, with the Singapore GP approaching, Ferrari must consider a possible replacement.
Lewis Hamilton’s difficult situation
There are still no confirmed reports suggesting that Lewis Hamilton will miss the Singapore Grand Prix, but the possibility cannot be ruled out entirely. For several days now, Roscoe, the British driver’s dog, has been unwell and is undergoing treatment to recover. The seven-time world champion has been keeping fans updated on his pet’s health and, a few days ago, revealed a worrying deterioration due to pneumonia.
“Please keep Roscoe in your thoughts. Roscoe has pneumonia again and has struggled to keep breathing. He was taken to the hospital and sedated while being monitored. During the process, his heart stopped. They managed to revive him and now he is in a coma. We don’t know if he will wake up,” he explained.
Because of this delicate situation, the British champion already skipped a Ferrari test and an official team event. This is why it is possible that, if Roscoe’s condition worsens, Lewis Hamilton could ask not to take part in the Singapore race in order to stay close to his beloved bulldog.
Who could replace Hamilton?
Lewis Hamilton decided to skip the Pirelli tyre tests that took place on Friday to remain by his dog’s side. In his place, alongside Charles Leclerc, it was Ferrari’s reserve driver Guanyu Zhou who drove at Mugello.
Through social media, the seven-time world champion also confirmed that he would not be attending another Ferrari event. He had been scheduled to take part in the Ferrari parade in Milan, but because of the difficult situation he had to cancel his appearance.
“I was really excited to take part in the parade in Milan, but now I need to be with Roscoe,” Hamilton said.
The implications for Ferrari
This leaves Ferrari with a new question. If Roscoe does not improve and Hamilton understandably wishes to remain at his side, who will line up for the team in Singapore?
The most obvious choice would be Guanyu Zhou, who has already stepped in for Lewis Hamilton during the Pirelli tests. The Chinese driver is one of Ferrari’s two official reserve drivers. The other is Antonio Giovinazzi, who is also competing in the World Endurance Championship, which is why the two alternate in the role. For the Singapore weekend, it should be Zhou’s turn, making him the most likely replacement. However, nothing has been officially decided or confirmed yet.
