Stefano Domenicali has played down expectations around a sequel to the F1 movie, explaining why a second chapter will not arrive in the near future. Despite all the right conditions being in place for a follow-up to the F1 film, the Formula 1 CEO has urged calm. A sequel will not come immediately, or at least not anytime soon.
The movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski, was filmed across the 2023 and 2024 Formula 1 seasons, with the production crew capturing scenes during Grand Prix weekends and even involving the drivers themselves. The film was released in cinemas on 25 June, following a long and extensive promotional campaign. Lewis Hamilton is among the producers of the project.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 at the end of the 2025 Formula 1 season, Stefano Domenicali reflected not only on the recently concluded championship, but also on the impact the movie has had on the sport.
The F1 film generated more than 600 million dollars at the international box office. Ideas for a sequel already exist, but it appears that the production company wants to fully capitalise on the success of the first movie before moving ahead with a second instalment.
“Well, I think you can never say never,” Stefano Domenicali said. “We are working on a plan. It will not be done too soon because it needs to be digested.”
The F1 movie starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris has further accelerated the popularity of Formula 1 in North America, even beyond what the Netflix docuseries Drive to Survive had already achieved. Stefano Domenicali therefore hopes that any sequel will maintain the same level of credibility as the first chapter: “The next one will have to be credible, authentic and new.”
The impact of the F1 movie on the US market
Speaking about the 2025 world championship, the Formula 1 CEO stated: “I think it has been a truly incredible season. We managed to reach the final race with three drivers still fighting for the title. Watching them battle is simply incredible.”
There was also great satisfaction from an economic point of view: “This season has been phenomenal because we have seen growth. We have welcomed new fans. We have recorded strong interest from many commercial partners, who have understood the value of what we are offering,” he explained.
In 2026, Cadillac will officially enter Formula 1 as the eleventh team on the grid. This step is fundamental because it will allow the pinnacle of motorsport to penetrate even further into the United States market. This is why Stefano Domenicali has invited everyone to let the F1 movie “breathe”, so that it can reach audiences across the Atlantic more effectively, something that will ultimately support the rapid expansion of Formula 1.
The F1 movie has also received two Golden Globe nominations, in the categories of Best Original Score and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
As Formula 1 continues to bridge the gap between world-class sport and global entertainment, the focus remains on quality over speed. While fans may have to wait a little longer for Brad Pitt’s return to the paddock, the continued success of the first film and the sport’s booming popularity ensure that the future of F1 on the silver screen is as bright as it is on the track.
