Verstappen chasing an unlikely comeback
In a season dominated from start to finish by McLaren, Max Verstappen has managed to keep himself in contention thanks to his ability to maximize almost every weekend. The Dutchman has won each race where he had a realistic chance, including Suzuka, Imola, Monza and Baku, showing once again why he remains one of the strongest drivers on the grid.
Max Verstappen’s consistency has allowed him to remain just 69 points behind the championship leader despite McLaren’s supremacy. With only seven race weekends left in the calendar, the odds are against him. However, because of his talent and proven ability, he cannot be fully ruled out of the title fight. If Red Bull continues to improve even on high-downforce tracks such as Singapore, Max Verstappen could still have an outside shot at the championship.
Leclerc’s words on Verstappen
Charles Leclerc, who has great respect for Max Verstappen, still considers him to be a potential contender for the title. “I think he has a 20% chance of making it,” said the Ferrari driver during the Singapore press conference. “The gap is quite substantial, and recently we have been racing on low-downforce tracks where Red Bull was very strong. I expect McLaren to return to the level we have seen for most of the season, both here and on the other circuits we will face soon.”
Charles Leclerc added: “It seems very unlikely, but you never know. Red Bull brought an update in Monza that appeared to work very well. I am not sure it will have the same impact on high-downforce tracks, and I don’t think it will be enough to beat McLaren.”
