Ayao Komatsu compares Rafael Câmara and Oliver Bearman as Haas builds Ferrari-backed future

Oliver Bearman, Jerome d'Ambrosio, 2026 F1

There has been extensive discussion in recent months about Esteban Ocon’s future and who could replace him at Haas in 2027. Now the decision is official: the American team has chosen Rafael Câmara, placing its faith in the young Brazilian’s talent for the future and creating another important pathway from the Ferrari Driver Academy into Formula 1.

The move means Rafael Câmara is set to follow a route already taken by Oliver Bearman, with both drivers emerging from Ferrari’s junior programme before receiving their Formula 1 opportunity with Haas. The Brazilian’s promotion had been anticipated for some time, with Rafael Câmara emerging as the leading candidate for the 2027 Haas seat before the agreement was finalised.

Ayao Komatsu explains why Haas chose Rafael Câmara

Following the announcement, Rafael Câmara and Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu took part in an exclusive media meeting. During the conference, the Japanese manager explained the reasons behind the team’s decision to choose the Brazilian, emphasising that his qualities behind the wheel had been decisive.

“Rafa has demonstrated incredible speed and driving sensitivity: those were the main and decisive factors, above every other consideration.”

Rafael Câmara, just like Oliver Bearman, is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, the programme dedicated to developing Maranello’s young talents. Haas’s collaboration with Ferrari gives the American team an opportunity to assess drivers from the Scuderia’s academy before a potential step into Formula 1. The significance of that relationship has increased further now that Rafael Câmara has been confirmed for Haas in 2027.

“As you all know, we have a very good relationship with Ferrari, but that simply means having access to Ferrari Driver Academy drivers. When we put Ollie in FP1 in Mexico, it was largely thanks to that collaboration. We were very impressed with him, so much so that we gave him six free practice sessions during the following year before signing him for 2025.”

The same process eventually led Haas to Rafael Câmara, whose progress the team monitored closely throughout his development in Formula 2. His qualifying performances in Monaco and Monza provided further encouragement, while the feedback gathered during a Testing of Previous Cars session at Portimão also played an important role.

“It was the same with Rafa: we followed his progress, and what he did this year in qualifying sessions such as Monaco and Monza was impressive. The connection with Ferrari gave us the opportunity to evaluate him and, during the TPC test at Portimão, the Brazilian was simply exceptional.”

Komatsu has no fear over Rafael Câmara’s Formula 1 step

Promoting a young driver into Formula 1 inevitably involves risks. Adapting to the category can take time, while mistakes can also have significant financial consequences for a team. Despite that, Ayao Komatsu explained that he is not particularly concerned, pointing instead to the qualities that persuaded Haas to commit to Rafael Câmara.

“Obviously every decision carries risks, but we absolutely wanted a driver with this natural speed and driving sensitivity, because those are qualities that cannot be taught. Looking at some F2 races, sometimes he races very well and manages the tyres well, while other times less so. His racecraft can be refined, but those are areas we can work on together, whereas driving sensitivity cannot be taught, and he has it.”

Another element that impressed the Haas team principal was Rafael Câmara’s ability to adapt quickly to constantly changing track conditions during the Portimão test, handling the different variables with composure.

How Rafael Câmara compares with Oliver Bearman

During the meeting, Ayao Komatsu also drew a direct comparison between Rafael Câmara and Oliver Bearman, highlighting similarities in their speed and potential while acknowledging that the two Ferrari-developed drivers have different characteristics. Haas had already spent considerable time evaluating whether two Ferrari-affiliated talents could form its future line-up, with Komatsu previously stressing that performance would determine Haas’s 2027 driver choices.

“In terms of potential they are very similar, although they are also very different. What impressed me most about Ollie was how he understood the situation as a whole, as well as the way he carried out the work during FP1 in Mexico on his first outing in an F1 car. It was a very different scenario compared with Rafa at Portimão, which was a genuine direct comparison with other drivers.”

Ayao Komatsu then expanded on what had impressed him most during the Brazilian’s test, particularly his ability to interpret changing circuit conditions and remain focused in a competitive environment.

“In terms of speed, the excitement is similar, but what impressed us about Rafa was his ability to interpret conditions that were changing on every lap. You need enormous sensitivity to the available grip to be able to do that. In addition, knowing that it was a direct comparison, he was able to put himself in the right mental state to focus only on what he needed to do, without becoming obsessed with the final result.”

The team principal concluded by reiterating that the biggest common factor between the two young drivers is their ability to continue growing and developing their talent within the team.

“The common element between the two of them, beyond speed, is therefore potential. They both have the characteristic of being focused on themselves: Ollie is very self-critical and Rafa is the same. They concentrate on what is under their control, on how to give their best, pushing the team forward. They are both incredibly fast and, by focusing on their own work, the understanding will come naturally. They both know how to grow together, nurturing their talent and allowing it to blossom.”

Ayao Komatsu wants Oliver Bearman to continue with Haas

The conference also provided an opportunity to discuss Oliver Bearman’s future. Although his continued presence at Haas for 2027 has not yet been officially announced, Ayao Komatsu reiterated the team’s desire to continue working with the young British driver, with a formal announcement expected once the remaining details have been completed.

Oliver Bearman’s future has been the subject of considerable discussion because of his Ferrari links and his continued development at Haas. Previous reports have indicated that Haas has an option to retain Oliver Bearman for the 2027 season, while his performances continue to strengthen his position within the team.

“I can’t go into the contractual details, but from my side it’s obvious that I would like to continue with Ollie. He has incredible talent, his growth has been extraordinary and this year he has shown that he is ready to become a team leader, as you could also see from the way he raced in Singapore. It is only a matter of timing to finalise a few details, but the intention to continue with him is there and the formal announcement will come in due course.”
