Rafael Camara has emerged as the leading candidate for a Haas Formula 1 seat in 2027 alongside Oliver Bearman, with the Brazilian now understood to be close to securing the opportunity. One important detail, however, changes the picture compared with the first indications: rather than the move being driven primarily by team principal Ayao Komatsu, Gene Haas is believed to be the strongest force behind the growing preference for the Ferrari junior.
Ayao Komatsu had previously spoken about five names being evaluated for Haas’s future, with the work carried out over recent months allowing the team to gather extensive information through testing and direct comparisons. From that original group, Rafael Camara and Italian driver Leonardo Fornaroli emerged as the two strongest candidates.
Rafael Camara leads Haas 2027 seat race
The technical evaluation therefore also passed through Ayao Komatsu and the structure around him. However, Gene Haas is understood to have pushed more decisively towards Rafael Camara, helping steer the team towards the Brazilian as its preferred option for 2027.
The development fits into a broader process in which Ferrari has already invested heavily in Rafael Camara’s progression. Frédéric Vasseur has previously outlined Ferrari’s substantial backing for Rafael Camara’s potential Haas move, highlighting just how important his preparation for Formula 1 has become to Maranello.
Rafael Camara has become an important Ferrari investment
Rafael Camara is not arriving at this opportunity without a carefully developed programme behind him. The Brazilian has become an important investment for Ferrari, particularly considering the testing programme he has completed and the mileage he has accumulated in Formula 1 machinery.
Maranello has worked on his preparation by progressively integrating Rafael Camara into the team’s procedures and giving him experience in car management, working with engineers and delivering technical feedback. Rafael Camara is also a Ferrari reserve driver, further strengthening his connection with Maranello and making a potential move to Haas a natural continuation of the development path built so far.
The tests have served another purpose as well. They allowed Haas to look beyond results in the junior categories and assess the candidates directly in terms of adaptability, preparation and consistency. Rafael Camara’s performances in those tests were very positive and impressed members of the team, particularly Gene Haas. That quickly placed him high on the list of preferred candidates, alongside the significant potential that both Haas and Ferrari see in his development.
Leonardo Fornaroli also impressed Haas
It is important to stress that the move towards Rafael Camara does not appear to have resulted from a negative assessment of Leonardo Fornaroli. On the contrary, the Italian performed particularly well in terms of preparation and produced positive feedback during his work with the team.
Leonardo Fornaroli showed a very solid approach, arriving well prepared for the planned programmes and confirming himself as one of the most highly regarded drivers in the selection process. It is therefore no coincidence that, from the five names initially mentioned by Ayao Komatsu, Rafael Camara and Leonardo Fornaroli emerged as the two strongest candidates.
The final difference appears to have been determined by other factors rather than by a lack of confidence in Leonardo Fornaroli.
Gene Haas gives Rafael Camara’s candidacy a major push
Ayao Komatsu has led the technical evaluation process, but the preference for Rafael Camara is understood to have found its strongest supporter in Gene Haas. The team owner is believed to have given the Brazilian’s candidacy a major push, moving him ahead in the battle for the 2027 seat.
The comparison with Leonardo Fornaroli remains significant for precisely that reason. Rather than representing a rejection of the Italian, the direction towards Rafael Camara appears to be a decision to commit strongly to the investment represented by the Ferrari junior, with direct support from the team’s ownership.
Haas could become even more closely linked to Ferrari in 2027
A potential arrival for Rafael Camara would also have particular significance for the relationship between Haas and Maranello.
Oliver Bearman also developed through the Ferrari Driver Academy and is a Ferrari reserve driver. His progression from the Maranello programme into a full-time Haas seat has already demonstrated how the partnership can provide a route into Formula 1, with Oliver Bearman’s Ferrari background and move to Haas forming an important precedent.
If Rafael Camara were to line up alongside Oliver Bearman, Haas would therefore enter the 2027 season with two Ferrari-backed drivers. For Maranello, that would create a particularly interesting situation: two young talents in whom Ferrari has invested directly would both hold full-time Formula 1 seats within the same customer team.
From the five names initially identified by Ayao Komatsu, the field gradually narrowed mainly to Rafael Camara and Leonardo Fornaroli. The decisive factor, however, now appears to be the strong backing of Gene Haas, which has pushed Rafael Camara to the front of the race for the 2027 seat.
