Rafael Câmara will become a Haas Formula 1 driver from the 2027 season after the American team officially confirmed the 21-year-old Brazilian on a multi-year contract. The promotion represents the biggest step yet in a career that has developed steadily through the junior categories, culminating in the 2025 Formula 3 title and his current lead in the Formula 2 championship.
Rafael Câmara will reach Formula 1 after spending six seasons under the guidance of the Ferrari Driver Academy, which he joined in 2021. His route has similarities with that followed by Oliver Bearman, who currently races for Haas, further underlining the importance of the relationship between the American team and Maranello in developing young talent. The Brazilian’s progression and previous F1 prospects can also be explored in the Rafael Câmara career profile.
Rafael Câmara earns Haas F1 promotion after Formula 2 breakthrough
Rafael Câmara currently leads the Formula 2 standings with 207 points, with two rounds still remaining in the season. Driving for Invicta Racing, the Brazilian has claimed three Feature Race victories, in Spain, Belgium and Azerbaijan, along with six podium finishes and five pole positions. Those results have reinforced the potential he had already demonstrated during the previous season, when he became Formula 3 champion.
However, his promotion to Formula 1 was not based solely on his performances in the junior categories. An important step came during a test at Portimão in August, when Rafael Câmara had the opportunity to drive the Haas VF-25 as part of the team’s Testing of Previous Cars programme. The session allowed Haas to evaluate the Brazilian directly behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car after months in which his prospects of securing the 2027 Haas seat had continued to strengthen.
“I don’t think I need to remind anyone of his results in the junior categories, they have been really impressive,” team principal Ayao Komatsu commented. “In his first Formula 2 season he showed remarkable speed even in particularly difficult situations, such as qualifying in Monaco and Montreal. Those are performances that demonstrate Rafa’s potential.”
Portimão test convinced Haas of Rafael Câmara’s potential
Ayao Komatsu also highlighted what emerged during the Portuguese test, particularly Rafael Câmara’s ability to adapt quickly to a completely unfamiliar environment.
“When he drove our car in the TPC programme in Portugal, he showed that he could manage himself very well despite having very little time to get to know the car. He showed us something that goes beyond pure speed. Rafa was able to create the conditions to get the maximum out of himself, and it was really impressive. Some of the laps he completed were very special.”
Those comments suggest Haas evaluated not only Rafael Câmara’s outright speed but also his working approach, an especially important quality for a rookie preparing to deal with the technical complexity of Formula 1.
“We are all excited about this opportunity and we are determined to support the development of this talent,” Ayao Komatsu added. “We want to give him an environment in which he can feel comfortable, supported by the team and in the ideal conditions to express all of his abilities.”
Gene Haas points to Oliver Bearman’s Ferrari academy pathway
Gene Haas also highlighted the value of the journey completed by his new driver, referring to the team’s previous experience with Oliver Bearman. The British driver followed a similar path through Maranello’s junior programme before establishing himself in Formula 1, with his rise through the Ferrari Driver Academy providing another example of the route from Ferrari’s development structure to Haas.
“I’m curious to see what Rafael can do in Formula 1, considering the results he achieved in Formula 3 and this year in Formula 2. At this level the challenge is different, but our experience with Ollie Bearman, who followed a similar path through the Ferrari Driver Academy, has shown us that these young drivers arrive well prepared and can make an immediate impact on the team. Rafa impressed us during the TPC test and we can’t wait to develop our relationship further next season.”
For Rafael Câmara, the confirmation opens a new phase of his career, with the prospect of becoming one of the representatives of a new generation of Brazilian Formula 1 drivers. The Brazilian welcomed the announcement by thanking both Haas and Ferrari, which has supported him throughout his development.
Rafael Câmara thanks Haas and Ferrari ahead of 2027 debut
“I’m really happy to join Haas as a Formula 1 driver,” Rafael Câmara commented. “It’s an important step in my career and I want to thank Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for the trust they have placed in me. I’m also very grateful to the Ferrari Driver Academy for its support and for everything it has contributed to my development over these years, as well as to my family, who have always been by my side throughout this journey.”
The Brazilian is already focused on preparing for his Formula 1 debut: “Now my goal is to prepare myself in the best possible way for this new challenge. There will be so many things to learn and I can’t wait to work closely with the team, get to know the car and continue growing as a driver.”
Rafael Câmara’s signing provides further confirmation of the link between Haas and the Ferrari Driver Academy, a pathway that in recent years has allowed the American team to identify young drivers in whom it can invest. Earlier developments surrounding his future had already highlighted how Haas had become central to Rafael Câmara’s Formula 1 prospects.
After his successes in the junior categories, the Brazilian now faces the biggest challenge of his career: proving that he can transfer to Formula 1 the qualities that have carried him all the way to the highest level of motorsport.
