2025 F1 Emilia Romagna GP: Ferrari seeks redemption, McLaren seeks confirmation at Imola. Imola marks the first key turning point of the 2025 F1 season.

McLaren MCL39, 2025 F1

With the first six rounds of the 2025 championship now behind us, F1 prepares for its first European triple-header of the season. The Imola GP will be the first crossroads of the championship: Ferrari is looking for its first positive signals to save the season, while Piastri is determined to continue his unstoppable streak against a lackluster Norris.

The Circus returns to Europe for the first weekend on the “Old Continent” in 2025. Welcoming the teams is the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the historic Imola track whose future appears more uncertain than ever. Despite the unclear outlook, the Santerno circuit remains one of the most appreciated by drivers and is expected to offer an “exciting race,” according to McLaren team principal Andrea Stella.

McLaren, the undisputed top team of the championship, arrives in Romagna with a clear intent to reaffirm its ambitions. Andrea Stella analyzes the Imola circuit, identifying it as “a real challenge that combines fast and slow corners, demanding a lot from both drivers and engineers.”

Oscar Piastri vs Lando Norris: McLaren to Discover Its Leader at Imola
Andrea Stella wants to continue the positive trend that began back in Melbourne. “The season started off strong and rich—we want to keep it going at Imola too!” Oscar Piastri is certainly one determined to stay on course after recent strong weekends. The Australian leads the drivers’ standings by 16 points over teammate Norris.

After winning in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, the 2001-born driver is chasing another victory in Imola. “I come into this weekend with a lot of confidence and positivity. I’m very determined and want to keep pushing. Imola is an old-school circuit, and I’m really happy to take it on with this car.”

“I’m going through a good moment and I want to maintain this level,” says the Papaya driver on the eve of the Italian Grand Prix. The perspective is slightly different for teammate Lando Norris, winner of the Miami Sprint but underwhelming so far this season. “The car has always been great. I’m ready to tackle the upcoming weekends,” says the Briton.

For Lando Norris, the Imola round could already prove to be crucial. After two weeks off, the British driver is called upon to raise his game in order to find the consistency and mental strength needed to compete with teammate Piastri. Will the Romagna race determine McLaren’s number one driver for 2025?

Ferrari, Corrections Needed: First Answers to Come at Imola
If Imola is important for McLaren, determined to confirm its impressive form, it’s even more so for Ferrari, facing a make-or-break moment. The Scuderia’s dismal early-season performances in 2025 have sent Maranello back to work: the team is working relentlessly to revive a season that started decidedly on the wrong foot.

At their home track, Frederic Vasseur’s team will bring the first real updates of the season, which could already hint at a direction for the rest of the championship. Can the Prancing Horse hope to bounce back, or will it be forced to struggle through to the end of the season? Some answers will come at Imola, before the spotlight moves to Barcelona—where Ferrari is expected to introduce a major upgrade package. However, the updates announced by Fred Vasseur for the Imola weekend “are not the main issue,” as stated by the team principal himself.
