Will Ferrari be strong in 2026? Italian former racing driver hints at a historical pattern. Riccardo Patrese sees McLaren dominating 2025 but believes Ferrari could return to winning ways in 2026.

One of the main questions teams are currently asking themselves concerns how to plan their development work. On one hand, there are teams like McLaren aiming to maximize results this season, while others, including Ferrari, are hoping to have a competitive car in 2026, when F1 will undergo yet another technical revolution.

The prophecy of a former Italian driver
Interviewed during the Sport Business Forum in Belluno, Riccardo Patrese shared his thoughts on the current season, highlighting a dominant McLaren and a struggling Ferrari. “McLaren seems to have the best car compared to their rivals. That’s why I think in the end they will dominate, winning both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles. Even Max Verstappen will struggle to keep up, although Max is the only one capable of making a difference like Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher used to. He’s one of those drivers who can win even with a car that isn’t up to standard. But I think that over the course of the season Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will come out on top,” said the former driver.

“As for Ferrari, after the end of last season I certainly expected something different in this first part of the year. Next year there will be a revolution in Formula 1, with regulations that are very different from the current ones, and I hope they manage to go in the right direction. Usually Ferrari starts a winning cycle every twenty years, so this could be the right moment,” added Riccardo Patrese
