Why Miami GP won’t show the full impact of F1 2026 rule changes. David Coulthard warns that the Miami Grand Prix may not fully showcase the impact of F1’s new 2026 regulations.

David Coulthard has poured cold water on expectations ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, suggesting that the race weekend scheduled from May 1–3 at the Hard Rock Stadium will not be enough to fully reveal the real impact of Formula 1’s latest regulatory changes. Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, the former Scottish driver explained that the characteristics of the American circuit — dominated by slow and medium-speed corners — are unlikely to properly test the new rules.

“What will be interesting to observe is that in Miami we won’t necessarily see the results of these changes, because of the nature of the track. There are many slow and medium-speed corners. There’s nothing truly big or iconic where you can say: ‘Wow, I saw the driver or the car do something special’. We need to give it a few races. I remain optimistic, though. I think it will make a difference, without a doubt. The new rules may reduce those overtakes that looked exciting, but is it really an overtake if you reduce power while the other has boost because they were in the right place? It’s a source of power. We’ll see fewer of them, but they will be more meaningful. More driver positioning, more slipstreaming. There will still be boost, like the old DRS. I’m optimistic.”

Coulthard’s analysis highlights a key point in the early phase of the 2026 season: evaluating regulatory changes requires context, and not every circuit provides the same level of insight. Tracks with more high-speed sections and heavy braking zones are expected to better showcase the effectiveness of the revised systems.

For Miami, however, the focus may remain on incremental observations rather than definitive conclusions. The true impact of the new rules is likely to emerge only over a sequence of races, as teams, drivers, and engineers continue to adapt and refine their understanding of the evolving Formula 1 landscape.

While the Miami Grand Prix remains a glitzy highlight on the calendar, David Coulthard’s insights suggest that the technical evolution of Formula 1 is a marathon, not a sprint. By managing expectations for the upcoming weekend, he highlights the importance of circuit variety in evaluating the success of the new rules. Whether or not Miami delivers a classic, the long-term goal remains a more authentic and skill-based racing experience for the world’s best drivers.
