Oliver Bearman has been one of the standout drivers in the early stages of the season. He scored points in the first two races and was running inside the top 10 in Suzuka before an accident forced him to retire prematurely. However, the British driver is no stranger to making an impression, as already seen in certain moments during 2025 and, above all, during his remarkable debut in Jeddah two years ago, when he was called up to replace Carlos Sainz.
That Grand Prix became his calling card within the Formula 1 paddock and ultimately convinced Haas to place its trust in him, despite a Formula 2 campaign that had not been particularly outstanding.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, the 20-year-old reflected on that defining moment, expressing gratitude not only for the opportunity—something many of his peers can only dream of—but also for the immense challenge it represented.
“I’ll always be in debt to Carlos, because everything happened thanks to him, even though I feel sorry for his appendix,” he said with a smile. “In Saudi Arabia I had the chance to show the world that I deserved Formula 1. Without that opportunity, I don’t think I would have been promoted.”
“The Jeddah weekend was a crucial moment for me. All eyes were on me, but I was quite calm—I could joke with my mechanics or my physio. I think I’ve always been good at handling pressure. Obviously, it’s different once you’re in the car, but I haven’t noticed huge differences between last year and this one.”
“I’m my own biggest critic, so I don’t really pay attention to external comments. Maybe one day that will change, when I’m fighting for something bigger, but for now I’m the one who demands the most from myself,” Oliver Bearman added.
Oliver Bearman’s journey to the F1 grid highlights how a single moment of opportunity can define a driver’s career trajectory. By stepping into a Ferrari under the most difficult circumstances in Jeddah, he demonstrated the mental resilience and raw pace required for the pinnacle of motorsport. Now a permanent fixture in the 2026 season, Bearman continues to demand excellence from himself as he navigates the challenges of his first full campaign with Haas.
