Speaking exclusively in front of the F1 Web Magazine microphones, Formula 1 expert and analyst Giorgio Terruzzi focused on the budget cap matter, commenting on the recent statements made by Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur regarding the penalty received by Red Bull last year due to exceeding the budget cap limit. The well-known Italian journalist also answered a question that many Formula 1 fans ask themselves: why do Mercedes and the Maranello team – given the ridiculous penalty received by Red Bull – do not exceed the maximum spending limit? Here are some of his most important comments:
Giorgio Terruzzi and the budget cap
“This is an old topic, we all said it when that decision was communicated last year. Of course it is a laughable penalty. Especially thinking of a year like 2021, with that ending there. But this is nothing new, it is something we already knew. We had a discussion last summer.”
George Russell said ‘Red Bull is hiding to prevent the FIA from turning the tables’…
“You can’t change the rules during the year. In 2022 there was a problem – somewhat exploited – which highlighted the bouncing of the cars, this year I don’t think there are any elements in this direction. I think something more serious could happen if there are more budget cap infringements. In that case, the penalties would be harsher.”
Big enough to push the teams to give up the goal of catching Red Bull?
“In the meantime, I believe that you have to make the car more efficient. The rest is a bit fanciful reasoning, it’s not like a team breaches the rules on purpose. You can’t think like this, otherwise it all becomes a jungle. At the first check, last year, they found some irregularities. But it’s not like you can say “we evade taxes, so much the fines…”. It can’t be done like this otherwise it will become hell”.
