A light-hearted moment after Chinese GP qualifying
At the end of qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was involved in a humorous moment that also included former Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. The scene unfolded in the Mercedes garage shortly after the session had concluded.
Just as in the opening race of the season in Australia, Mercedes dominated the qualifying sessions. For Sunday’s race, Andrea Kimi Antonelli will start from pole position for the first time in his Formula 1 career, while the other Mercedes driven by George Russell will line up alongside him on the front row. Right behind them on the grid will be the two Ferrari cars of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
After the session ended, Wolff briefly had a moment of confusion that turned into a light-hearted exchange inside the Mercedes garage. The amusing scene quickly caught the attention of fans.
Two or three Mercedes in China?
The three drivers who secured the top three positions in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix all share a strong connection with Mercedes. Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell are the current drivers for the Brackley-based team, while Lewis Hamilton spent twelve seasons racing for the Silver Arrows, winning six world championships during that time.
For a brief moment, Toto Wolff seemed to go back in time and momentarily forgot that Lewis Hamilton now races for Ferrari.
In a video posted by Mercedes themselves, Wolff can be seen watching the ceremony dedicated to the top three qualifiers and jokingly admitting: “For a moment I really thought we had three cars: first, second and third. I need to get used to it.”
When someone pointed out that one of those drivers—Lewis Hamilton—is now wearing red and competing for Ferrari, Toto Wolff didn’t hesitate to respond with another playful remark: “He’s still our driver anyway.”
The exchange offered a light and humorous moment after an intense qualifying session, highlighting the long-standing relationship between Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes team where he achieved so much success during his Formula 1 career.
