What is happening in the Nevada night is surreal. In addition to the issue of exposed manhole covers that knocked out Carlos Sainz’s SF23 in the very brief first free practice session, a pedestrian bridge reportedly collapsed before the start of the first free practice session for the 2023 Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, forcing fans to circumnavigate the area of the Sphere and the Venetian Hotel to access the circuit.
GP Las Vegas, a pedestrian bridge collapses before the start of FP1
“It is unacceptable what happened in the first free practice session,” commented a furious Frederic Vasseur, referring to the problem of exposed manhole covers that sidelined Carlos Sainz after a few minutes into FP1.
“We have completely damaged the chassis, the power unit, and the battery. Carlos will not be able to take part in FP2. Unacceptable, really.” – the French manager pointed out and rightfully so.
The disruptions caused by the first session had a significant impact on the FP2 proceedings. The session was postponed by two hours from the scheduled time.
Upon learning the official time when the green light will go out for the second session, a fan on social media commented: “2:30?! I’m waiting in my hotel for any news about FP2, but 2:30 in the morning is a tough time for me.”

“The walk from the center is 40 minutes. A damn pedestrian bridge broke before FP1, and people had to walk to the Sphere area through the Venetian hotel. Then every staircase or door is congested.”
“Some with the Red Bull backpacks told us when we tried to follow the designated route on Koval Lane. Many of us were diverted and followed a huge crowd. I don’t know more. But the official designated pedestrian path for the Sphere area was not active at 7:30 local time. The red circle was presumably closed due to the collapse of a bridge.”
