The organizers of the Japanese GP have declared war on track limits, introducing a solution for curbs and run-off areas. Suzuka’s layout has been altered for this reason—let’s take a closer look as we approach the race weekend.
First of all, the track was resurfaced over the winter. Free practice sessions will be crucial for drivers to understand the characteristics of this new asphalt. But that’s not the only change made by the organizers. In three sections of the track, the entirely green strip of concrete has been removed, leaving only the red-and-white and green-and-white sections.
Track limits and the resulting penalties remain an ongoing issue. Some circuits have opted for gravel strips that slow drivers down without making the track dirty if a car runs wide. At Suzuka, not only have the curbs been adjusted, but the run-off areas have also been modified. Grass has been replaced with traditional gravel, which always poses a challenge for drivers. Here are photos of the three modified areas:
Which parts of the track were affected? Specifically, changes were made at the exit of Turn 2, the exit of Turn 9 leading into the tunnel, and the exit of Turn 14. These modifications should help prevent track limit violations, as drivers will naturally be slowed down by the gravel.
A gift for the fans!
Suzuka has also made changes to improve the spectator experience. Starting this year, fans attending the circuit will be able to watch the on-track action from an old forest that has been cleared. With fewer trees, spectators can now position themselves in many more spots to view different iconic sections of the track.
