Fred Vasseur is currently dealing with a Ferrari that is no longer as competitive as last season, while also seeing an opportunity to catch up with McLaren. According to George Russell, closing the gap to the Woking-based team was impossible, but Ferrari’s team principal has delved into the matter, fueling fans’ hopes.
“I think McLaren is definitely capable of winning every race.” The Mercedes driver then added, “The gap they have this year over everyone else is greater than what Red Bull ever had. But when Max was driving the 2023 car, it was quite reliable.”
Fred Vasseur fuels hope
Ferrari’s team principal disagrees with George Russell’s assessment that McLaren is unreachable. Fred stated, “I think the gap is much, much smaller than what we saw last year between Red Bull and the other teams.”
To draw a comparison to the current situation, Fred Vasseur referred to the 2024 Sprint Race in China, where Max Verstappen secured victory. “I looked at the 2024 Sprint Race in China, where Max started from P6. He won the race with a 16-second lead.”
Last year, after the first few races, many believed the championship was already decided in favor of Max Verstappen and Red Bull. However, things turned out differently, as Ferrari and McLaren battled for the Constructors’ Championship until the final race, while the Austrian team had to settle for third place in the standings.
Frederic Vasseur has energized the fans, hinting that a similar scenario could unfold again. “McLaren’s pace is strong, that’s clear, and I think they are a step ahead. But the championship is not over.” – the Ferrari team boss concluded after the Chinese Grand Prix.
