Italian manager and the current CEO of Formula One Group, Stefano Domenicali, believes that the possibility of Ferrari Driver Academy member Mick Schumacher following in his father’s footsteps at the Maranello team in the future would be a “great prospect”.
Stefano Domenicali was Ferrari’s sporting director at the forefront of Michael Schumacher’s career with the Italian side during the German and Ferrari’s most dominant years, and Haas driver Mick is currently also in Ferrari’s junior ranks, with the hope of one day driving for the Maranello team in Formula 1.
Mick Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut last season but had to settle for a place at the back of the grid due to the uncompetitive Haas car. The American team decided to focus all of its resources on developing their 2022 car, hoping to take advantage of the new rules and regulation to be able to challenge for a midfield place.
The Formula 1 CEO admitted that he was impressed with Mick’s first year in the sport taking into consideration the machinery at his disposal, and hopes to see Haas improve this season: “Mick is doing his job very well,” Stefano Domenicali said to Sport1, as quoted by Sky Sport in Germany. “In 2021, however, he suffered from not having a car with which he could prove his abilities. I really hope that the new Haas will give him the chance to show his talent.” – he added.

Scuderia Ferrari’s current line-up of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz is seen as one of the strongest on the grid, after a successful first year together and a significant amount of talent between them. Charles Leclerc already has a long-term contract with Ferrari, while Carlos Sainz will most likely receive a contract extension ahead of the next season, which means that both drivers should stay with the Maranello team until 2024. But if a chance comes for Mick Schumacher, Stefano Domenicali believes the German driver will be in string position to make the most of it:
“I had the privilege of working with Michael at Ferrari and of course Mick in a Ferrari would be a great prospect for the future,” he said – “At the moment, Ferrari has two fantastic drivers in Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who are also still young. But when Mick is ready and an opportunity presents itself to him, he will take it.” – he continued.
Mick’s cousin David Schumacher, son of Ralf, is also making his way up the motorsport ladder at the moment, having spent the last two seasons racing in Formula 3 – finishing 11th in the series in 2021.
“I have already spoken to Ralf about David and I am glad to see that he is developing well,” said Stefano Domenicali of the 20-year-old. “I think he has a good career ahead of him too – and for the German fans that would be great, of course.”
