Former Scuderia Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali, currently the president and chief executive officer of Formula 1, in a recent interview with the Italian daily newspaper Corriere, addressed various topics, including a “comparison” between Luca di Montezemolo and Sergio Marchionne, who led Ferrari at different times.
The current CEO and President of Formula 1 worked with both Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, in Maranello until 2014, and with Sergio Marchionne, who took his place until 2018.
“Montezemolo defined and characterized Ferrari, loving the company and the team. He was a very competent man who demanded a lot,” said Stefano Domenicali, when asked about the Italian businessman, former Chairman of Ferrari.
Regarding Sergio Marchionne, the Formula 1 chief executive officer commented: “Sergio Marchionne is the manager who saved Fiat, with outstanding intelligence, and from what I knew of him, an incredible worker. Like all quality people, it was not always easy to work with him because he pushed you to the limit. You had to understand how to manage the balance between your profession and your personal life.” – the Italian admitted.
Reflecting on thirty years in the racing world, Stefano Domenicali said: “Personally, I remember the victory with Ferrari in the 2000 Formula 1 championship at the Suzuka circuit in Japan, as well as the unforgettable 2008 season when we won the constructors’ championship but lost the drivers’ championship on the last lap of the final race. These are unforgettable moments that, despite their difficulties, make you grow. Otherwise, it means you’re not a sportsman capable of improving in challenging times.” – Stefano Domenicali pointed out.

When asked about the greatest driver of all time, the CEO of Formula 1 had no doubts in naming Michael Schumacher: “In every era, there are unmatchable champions, and therefore, each season must be contextualized. From my perspective and based on how I experienced it professionally and personally, I have no doubts: Michael Schumacher.” – Stefano Domenicali concluded.
