THE 1978 FORMULA 1 WORLD CHAMPION, MARIO ANDRETTI, REVEALS HIS IDEAS ON THE BROADER TOPICS OF THE CURRENT SEASON IN AN INTERVIEW
The interview covered various topics, but today we will focus on the most interesting news of the past year. Starting with the world champion Max Verstappen, former Scuderia Ferrari driver Mario Andretti is asked for his opinion on the Dutchman and his willingness to retire from Formula 1 if the sport takes “different directions.”
“I believe it’s right for him to express himself. As a driver, I think the direction this sport is taking is fantastic. What he may be implying is perhaps limiting the sprints, in other words, having two starts causes a lot of stress.” – pointed out the Italian-born American former racing driver, one of the most successful drivers in the history of motorsports.
Continuing on the topic of the format, another particularly debated question is about increasing the entertainment value of the race. Some people think that these ceremonies can only be a distraction for the drivers and a diversion from the Formula 1 event itself. Mario Andretti responds:
“Certainly, as a driver, you can’t wait to get in the car. That’s the main reason you’re there. However, you also have to consider the overall show. At the end of the day, it’s show business, what can you do?” – the 83-year-old believes.

The former world champion then reflects on the fate of Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc and his future with the Maranello team. “I believe Charles is working really hard. He’s trying to extract something from the car that isn’t there yet, and it’s not his fault in my opinion. On the other hand, I don’t think he could ever leave the team. Where would he go? The only plausible solution could be Mercedes if Lewis retired, but I doubt it.” – Mario Andretti concluded.
