Charles Leclerc climbs to sixth after bold move on Oscar Piastri
Charles Leclerc’s Spanish Grand Prix recovery drive continued to build momentum in the opening stages, as the Ferrari driver moved up to sixth place after a decisive overtake on Oscar Piastri.
After starting from tenth on the grid, Charles Leclerc had already gained ground on the opening lap, but his charge did not stop there. By lap 8 of 66, the Monegasque driver had recovered four positions and placed himself firmly back in the fight near the front of the midfield-leading group.
The move came after Oscar Piastri appeared to struggle with the balance of his McLaren, which looked difficult to manage through the early corners. As the Australian driver became slightly unsettled on the exit of Turn 1, Charles Leclerc reacted immediately and positioned his Ferrari perfectly to attack.
Rather than forcing the move too aggressively, the Monegasque committed to the outside line through Turns 3 and 4, using the long route around the McLaren to complete a highly impressive pass before the braking zone. The location of the move was particularly significant, as Turn 4 was also the corner where Charles Leclerc crashed during qualifying on Saturday.
For Ferrari, the overtake was an important sign that the 28-year-old had quickly regained confidence after his Q3 mistake. It also showed that the SF-26 had enough pace and stability in race trim to challenge rivals directly in the early phase of the Spanish Grand Prix.
With Oscar Piastri now behind him, Charles Leclerc’s next target is Max Verstappen, who is around 1.5 seconds up the road. Catching the Red Bull driver will not be easy, but the opening laps have already transformed Charles Leclerc’s race from damage limitation into a genuine recovery opportunity.
Ferrari will now need to manage tyre degradation carefully, especially with strategy expected to play a major role over the 66 laps in Barcelona. However, Charles Leclerc’s early progress has given the Scuderia a much stronger platform than expected after his difficult qualifying session.
