Lewis Hamilton’s recovery gathers momentum in Barcelona
Lewis Hamilton continued to make significant progress in the Spanish Grand Prix, using the advantage of fresher tyres to climb into sixth position after a decisive move on Oscar Piastri.
On lap 29 of 66, the Ferrari driver executed an impressive overtake around the outside of the McLaren through one of Barcelona’s demanding corners, completing the pass with confidence and precision. The move highlighted not only the pace of the SF-26 in race trim but also the strategic value of Ferrari’s tyre management during the opening stages of the race.
With newer tyres underneath him, the Briton was noticeably quicker than several of the drivers ahead. Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle pointed out the scale of the Ferrari driver’s pace advantage, noting that Lewis Hamilton was gaining time “hand over fist” thanks to the performance of his fresh rubber.
The overtake on Oscar Piastri was another important step in what had become an increasingly encouraging afternoon for Ferrari. After spending much of the race managing tyre degradation and positioning himself for a stronger second half, Lewis Hamilton was finally able to fully exploit the pace available in the upgraded SF-26.
Perhaps even more importantly for Ferrari, the seven-time world champion was rapidly closing the gap to Charles Leclerc. Following the move into sixth place, Lewis Hamilton found himself only five seconds behind his teammate, setting up the possibility of having both Ferraris fighting near the front during the closing stages.
The race pace shown by the SF-26 once again reinforced the positive signs Ferrari had displayed throughout the Barcelona weekend. While qualifying had already suggested that the latest upgrade package had brought the Scuderia closer to the front-running teams, the race was beginning to provide further evidence that the improvements were translating into competitive long-run performance as well.
With plenty of laps still remaining and tyre strategy continuing to play a crucial role, Lewis Hamilton’s charge was far from over. Ferrari now had an opportunity to turn strong pace into a significant result as the Spanish Grand Prix entered its decisive phase.
