Formula 1 wants to return to South Africa, this information is pretty much certain as this stage. Former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali, currently CEO of F1, has repeatedly expressed his determination to bring the South African Grand Prix back to the calendar and is continuing to work to ensure that this happens. Meanwhile, today’s edition of the Italian newspaper Tuttosport has reported some interesting details about how F1 plans to approach this matter.
Here is what the Italian sport newspaper published in Turin reports about a possible return of Formula 1 to South Africa:
“Today there is the possibility to bring racing back to South Africa. Some attempts have already been made, but in the end financial support has been lacking, in particular from the government. Now the decision seems to be in the hands of entrepreneur Bobby Hartslief, who had already managed to save the race in the 80s and who confirmed that he is working on putting together an offer for a new Grand Prix.” – Tuttosport informs.
The news
“The most striking update (and also the most interesting of all) is that F1 would no longer run on the Kyalami track (an attempt to race here was recently carried out, but it seems without a positive outcome) but it would be a matter of creating a street circuit at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (JEC), which is South Africa’s largest purpose-built exhibition, conference, convention and events venue, one of Johannesburg’s best-known landmarks.
Bobby Hartslief’s confirmation
“Bobby Hartslief recently confirmed the rumors: ‘Yes, I have been contacted to give advice on this matter. And that is the idea.’ The circuit could be located between the city and the stadium where Nelson Mandela gave his first speech after the liberation (in 1990) and made his last public appearance at the closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.” – Tuttosport reports.
