Former Scuderia Ferrari team principal and current Formula 1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali has highlighted that there is no issue regarding his relationship with Emirati former rally driver and current president of the FIA Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
The two represent the most important figures behind the decision made in Formula 1: Mohammed Ben Sulayem and the FIA are mainly responsible for the sporting and technical operations whilst Stefano Domenicali has the responsability of growing the Formula 1 championship from a commercial point of view.
Several issues, however, have affected Formula 1 in the 2022 championship, including fan experience, missile strikes in Saudi Arabia and the discussions regarding the rules and regulation for the new generation of power unit starting with the 2026 campaign, as existing OEMs tried to satisfy the requirements of prospective new teams that expressed their interest to join the sport.
According to some recent reports in the media, there were some ongoing tensions between the two bodies since Mohammed Ben Sulayem took up his post as president at the end of last year, after Jean Todt’s most recent term as FIA President ended. When asked to comment on how relations were between himself and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali said, in an interview for the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Serra:

“Formula 1 and FIA relations are the backbone of success. We have the obligation to maximise the commercial side, they are responsible for the sporting choices from the point of view of regulations, which now also concern financial controls. The new president took office in January, he is building his team. We talk to each other almost every day, the relationship must continue to be that while respecting each other’s responsibilities. The most important thing is to stay united and have a common vision of Formula 1.” – Formula 1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali concluded.
