The first free practice session in Imola ahead of the 2021 Emilia Romagna GP was all in all positive for Scuderia Ferrari, as the Maranello team finished with the fourth fastest time of Charles Leclerc and the sixth of Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard was in front of everyone for a long time during FP1, while the Monegasque was not able to take to the track as much as he would have liked – only 13 laps – remaining in the pits for a long time in the first part of the session.
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto later revealed the presence of serious radio problems on car number 16, with the Maranello technicians who opted to fix these issues before sending Charles Leclerc back to the track. Immediately after, however, the power unit of his SF21 accused of small technical issue, highlighted by the sensor data and telemetry.
Charles still returned to the track, setting a good time just over two tenths of a second behind Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, but the mechanics are working to fine-tune the engine and allow the driver to perform FP2 regularly without further limitations.
