Since the French Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari has been rebuilding the car. The result is more downforce in the corners, but a lower top speed on the straights. Nevertheless, the Maranello team’s weakness remains the same and is linked with overheating the tyres. In qualifying Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel are therefore in the fight for most of the time, but then in the race, the red cars are a lot slower.
Not only the SF90H car is obviously getting more and more modified. Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto is also rebuilding behind the scenes. The team leader actually never gave up his role as chief technical officer, but he has now split up the tasks, as three specialists work for the Italian side: Enrico Cardile (suspension), David Sanchez (aerodynamics) and Corrado Iotti (engine), according to recent reports in the Italian media. An official confirmation is pending, but Mattia Binotto himself explained: “Since I was appointed team principal, we have internally reorganized something, because I have to be supported specifically on the technical side. It’s not the same team anymore and it’s not entirely true that I have a dual role.”
Meanwhile, the return of ex-chief designer Simone Resta from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari has been announced. In Maranello, he heads the working group for the 2021 Formula One season, which will already begin with the concept of the first car according to the new rules. However, rumor in the Italian media has it that Ferrari is also looking for another important comeback. In Italy it is speculated that the information could be officially confirmed at the German Grand Prix, as many are discussing about a possible return from Aldo Costa.
Before the 2006 season, Aldo Costa was promoted to be the Head of Design and Development at Ferrari, as the team announced Nicholas Tombazis as their new Chief Designer. On 12 November 2007 Ferrari announced that Costa would take on the role of technical director. In May 2011, the Italian side announced that Costa had relinquished his position as technical director to take on new responsibilities within the company. Pat Fry took over the role of Chief Designer at Scuderia Ferrari. On 20 July 2011, it was announced that Costa would leave Ferrari by mutual agreement.
Mattia Binotto has explained his approach: “I always look forward, not backwards. My guidelines: talking to each other, exchanging information. It’s important for everyone to feel good at work. Stability, trust, passion – these are all key factors. This is summarized by the hashtag #EssereFerrari. But that does not mean that we accept not to win. But the team is under construction and this also requires patience.” – the Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal concluded.
