Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is possibly going through the most critical and challenging phase of his entire racing career. Amid growing signs of crisis and veiled, ambiguous statements about his relationship with Scuderia Ferrari, it is becoming increasingly difficult to understand exactly what is going through the mind of the British driver.
Like any intense love story, the partnership between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari initially seemed to promise a bright and successful future. However, as with many relationships, once the real challenges set in, misunderstandings and disagreements arise. Not everyone is always on the same page regarding key issues, and even when problems are temporarily resolved, the underlying tensions may remain.
At least, that’s the surface appearance. Beneath it all, understanding what is truly happening with the seven-time world champion at this moment is an incredibly complex task.
As the 2025 season reaches its midway point, Ferrari remains the second-best team behind McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship. Yet, despite this position, the overall results are far from satisfying to anyone involved. The gap to the front-running McLaren team is substantial, and Andrea Stella’s team is widely regarded as “unplayable” (to borrow a popular adjective circulating on social media recently). Charles Leclerc has been doing his best to patch up the situation and salvage as much as possible, but what about Lewis Hamilton?
What is visible to the cameras is the face of a 40-year-old driver who appears defeated, almost on the edge of despair, seemingly having lost faith in himself. “I’m useless,” he has said. “Ferrari should change drivers,” he added with a tone of resignation, as someone who feels they have tried everything but achieved zero results.
The question arises whether Lewis Hamilton truly wants to leave. Not leaving Ferrari in the sense of quitting racing entirely—retiring from the sport and hanging up his helmet and racing boots. Number 44 is a legend in Formula 1, yet he currently faces perhaps the darkest moment of his remarkable career, which has been marked by records, victories, and seven world titles—equaling one of the sport’s all-time greats (no need to name him).
Given Hamilton’s current mindset and the disappointing results so far this season, should he leave Ferrari? And to what end? At this delicate point in his life, stepping away might allow him to exit gracefully, focus on other pursuits, and avoid sinking further into a dark tunnel where he seems unable to find light.
Beyond the racing driver, there is also the human side of Lewis Hamilton. He is actively engaged in promoting inclusivity and standing up for the vulnerable, uniquely raising his voice against crimes against humanity—just days ago, he openly criticized Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.
On the other hand, choosing to leave Ferrari now could be seen as admitting defeat. Lewis Hamilton still loves racing, as he reiterated during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. It is hard to imagine him hanging up his helmet next year. Hamilton hates losing and, like any true champion, he possesses an innate sense of arrogance and ego that defines him. Without these traits, it is nearly impossible to become a multiple world champion.
Lewis Hamilton’s future with the Prancing Horse remains completely undecided and will ultimately be his own choice. Certain statements he has made are serious—extremely serious. They all point to a marital crisis between driver and team that, if not repaired, risks either persisting or, worse, exploding with devastating consequences.
